Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne, and Will Mallory come to mind. Is Damien Martinez next?

The Colts need depth at the running back position. That’s what Martinez would provide for the team. No, he isn’t projected to be a star like probable first-round pick Ashton Jeanty. But Martinez, who’s expected to be a fourth or fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, could become a valuable contributor as a pro.

The Indianapolis Colts Should Consider Taking Miami Running Back Damien Martinez in the 2025 NFL Draft

His Collegiate Career

Damien Martinez starred for Lewisville High School in Lewisville, Texas. He rushed for 4,341 yards and 66 touchdowns during his time at the school. He then committed to play college football at Oregon State, passing up schools like Kansas, San Diego State, Georgia Tech, and Texas State.

Martinez had a great debut season at Oregon State, rushing for 982 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 61 yards. As a result, he was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and was a member of the All-Pac-12 first team.

Martinez was spectacular during his sophomore year as well. He rushed for 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 11 passes for 126 yards. He received first-team All-Pac-12 honors once again.

Following two years at Oregon State, Martinez transferred to the University of Miami in April 2024. This past season with the Hurricanes, he recorded 1,002 rushing yards, 10 rushing touchdowns, 10 receptions, and a career-high 204 receiving yards.

Martinez was the first Miami player to produce at least 1,000 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns in the same season since Mark Walton did so in 2016. That’s impressive, seeing that Martinez split time with Mark Fletcher in the backfield.

During this season’s Pop-Tarts Bowl, Martinez rushed for a career-high 179 yards although Miami lost the game 42-41 to Iowa State. He later announced he would skip his senior year and enter the NFL draft.

Why the Colts Should Draft Him

Former Colts kicker Pat McAfee said the team should trade Jonathan Taylor a while back. McAfee is a great analyst, but he was wrong about that. There’s no point in trading Taylor, who’s easily the Colts’ best player right now.

Taylor is a superstar running back when he’s healthy. However, he has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons. That’s why the Colts need all the running back depth they can get. They signed backup Khalil Herbert this offseason, who could emerge as a good pickup. But Indy needs more depth behind Taylor than just Herbert.

Damien Martinez could be the man for the job. He’s a downhill runner who can punish tacklers. Honestly, what team wouldn’t want a running back like that?

Taylor’s backups last year, Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson, weren’t very impressive. Martinez might be an upgrade over both of those guys. He possesses a combination of patience and vision and also showcases quickness and elusiveness. So if the Colts have an opportunity to draft Damien Martinez, they should go ahead and do it.

Main Photo: Kirby Lee – Imagn Images

In need of running back depth, the Indianapolis Colts should think about taking Miami’s Damien Martinez in the 2025 NFL Draft.

[12,54,1647
33185,7800,6237
post-225450","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colts","category-editorials","category-nfl-draft","tag-damien-martinez","tag-indianapolis-colts-news","tag-jonathan-taylor
["GET
