Some have him as high as the second round while others see him falling to the fourth or fifth. He has fallen on draft boards, and the Colts might be hoping to scoop him up if he falls far enough. If the team used a second-round pick to acquire him, would fans be comfortable with that? That would surely mean Anthony Richardson has a huge target on his back. Second-round picks should play sooner rather than later. Does a fifth-round pick sit better? That could be seen as more of an insurance plan.”

Spradley is right. If the Colts draft Ewers in the second round, that would mean Richardson would have a target on his back. But it would make sense if the team drafted him in the fifth round. Fifth-round quarterbacks aren’t usually expected to be a starters immediately.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said there would be an open competition at quarterback. As a result, he signed Daniel Jones earlier this offseason. In training camp, Jones will compete with Anthony Richardson for the starting QB job. It will be an interesting battle between two former top-10 picks who’ve had disappointing careers so far.

If Indianapolis can land Ewers in the fifth round, it would be a steal for the franchise. He could compete with Jason Bean or fellow former Texas star Sam Ehlinger (if he re-signs this offseason) for the No. 3 quarterback spot. You never know, Ewers could eventually become the Colts’ franchise QB down the road. Stranger things have happened. He’s an experienced, tough quarterback with a good arm. He also has the intangibles to be a leader. Ewers displays great touch on his throws, can get the ball out quickly, and can throw on the move. So yes, the Colts should draft him, but only if he’s a Day 3 pick.

Main Image: Ricardo B.
