Player Background<\/h3>\n

Virginia Tech cornerback Dorian Strong grew up in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He attended Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School, where he played both cornerback and wide receiver. Strong was not heavily recruited coming out of high school despite being rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports<\/a>. He received only two offers and elected to play for Virginia Tech over Delaware State.<\/p>\n

Strong was a contributor for the Hokies from the time he set foot on campus. As a freshman, he played nearly 500 snaps and had five pass deflections. In his sophomore season, Strong became a full-time starter, playing over 600 snaps for the Hokies. After missing the majority of the 2022 season due to injury, Strong reestablished himself in 2023. That season, he allowed receptions on just 28% of targets and held opposing quarterbacks to a quarterback rating of 10.9, per PFF. Strong continued his production in his final collegiate season, forcing two interceptions and deflecting six passes.<\/p>\n

After impressing scouts at the Reese\u2019s Senior Bowl, Strong showed off his athletic ability at the NFL Combine<\/a>. He ran a 4.5-second forty-yard dash and posted a 36-inch vertical jump.<\/p>\n

Strengths<\/h3>\n

Dorian Strong shows promise in both man and zone coverage schemes. In man coverage, Strong uses his physicality to stick with receivers. He excels in press coverage, where he has a quick jab that allows him to move receivers off of their routes. Strong carries his physicality through the catch point, often forcing incompletions.<\/span><\/p>\n

In zone coverage, Strong keeps his eyes in the backfield and reacts quickly when the ball is thrown. He often anticipates quarterback decisions. Strong has good ball production, with five interceptions in his last two seasons at Virginia Tech.<\/span><\/p>\n

Weaknesses<\/h3>\n

Despite being measured at 6\u20191\u201d, Strong has below-average arm length. His lack of speed shows itself in man coverage on deep passes, where he tends to let receivers outpace him. Strong lacks the closing speed to recover when he allows separation. He consistently plays with a high pad level. This causes him to be slow to drive on short routes.
