He attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida where he was a three-star tight end recruit. Taylor made an immediate impact as a freshman at LSU finishing top three on the team in receiving yards. As a sophomore, Taylor played an important role in the top-scoring offense in the country. With many of the top playmakers from the previous season gone in 2024, Taylor took on an even larger role. During his junior season, he broke the single-season LSU record for receptions by a tight end with 55 receptions.

Strengths:

Taylor is a reliable pass catcher with natural hands, capable of consistently making catches away from his body. In contested catch situations his size, natural hands, and ability to high-point the football well make him a great 50/50 ball target for quarterbacks. He consistently gets open against zone coverage where he has good awareness and the ability to find soft spots in zone coverage. Taylor excels at getting open in the short and intermediate parts of the field and was a consistent chain mover for LSU.

Taylor is a versatile player who can line up both in line and in the slot. He is a strong and physical player who gives high effort as a run blocker. With the ball in his hands, he’s a solid threat after the catch, with good vision and contact balance.

Weaknesses:

Taylor is not an explosive player. He doesn’t threaten defenses with the ability to make big plays vertically down the field and has average long speed. As a run blocker, Taylor shows promise but needs to improve his hand technique and lower his pad level to become a more consistent blocker. With the ball in his hands, Taylor is not an elusive or creative runner and lacks the ability to consistently make defenders miss in open space.

Taylor is a quality route runner but needs to improve at getting out of his breaks. At times, he also struggles to separate against man coverage. Additionally, his red zone production at LSU was limited. Taylor recorded just two touchdowns in 2024 and one touchdown in 2023 despite being part of a top-scoring offense.

Potential Team Fits:

Indianapolis Colts

Los Angelas Chargers

New York Giants

NFL Projection:

Taylor is a well-rounded, high-floor tight-end prospect who can be an immediately reliable pass catcher in the NFL. He excels 0-15 yards down the field, with great awareness to get open against zone coverage. His consistency and ability to make catches despite tight coverage make him an ideal security blanket for quarterbacks. While he lacks the ability to be a threat downfield, if he can improve his blocking and refine his route running, Taylor can be a team’s top tight end in the NFL.

Prospect Grade:

Early Third Round

Main Photo: [Vasha Hunt] – USA Today Sports

Mason Taylor Scouting Report.
