He was a three-year starter for the Longhorns, playing in 56 games with 38 starts, and consistently improved. In his breakout 2024 season, Barron started all 15 games and won the coveted Jim Thorpe Award, given to the top DB in the nation. He also was named to the All-America First Team by the Associated Press, the All-American Second Team by Walter Camp and the AFCA, and ranked third in FBS in interceptions with five.

Barron plays like a seasoned veteran and his lengthy college career helped his physical and mental development. When you watch him, you see why the draft stock is rising as the draft nears. He’s everything you could ask for in a defensive back and is pro-ready entering training camp. His calling card is the physicality he plays with and is well-suited to play zone coverage from his time in Austin. Barron is a student of the game which allows him to diagnose coverages and makes him a very coachable athlete.

Strengths

Plus size and strength for a DB;

Plays with great awareness and instincts;

Excels at redirecting routes off the line of scrimmage;

Thinks like a WR;

Physical at the catch point;

Closes on routes with good angles of attack;

Stays balanced and remains controlled when tackling in the open field.

Weaknesses

Limited time playing man coverage;

Lacks top-end speed;

Less than ideal arm length at 29 5/8″;

Must improve consistency wrapping up;

Lateral quickness and recovery speed are questionable.

NFL Comparison: Roger McCreary

Teams With Need At Position: Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars

Projection: First Round

Bottom Line on Jahdae Barron

The bottom line on Barron is that he’s an intelligent, physical corner with plenty of playing experience. His tremendous work ethic will prepare him for the rigors of life in the NFL. Barron’s instincts are solid and he’s at his best when the ball is in the air where he can use his physical frame to wreak havoc on opposing wide receivers. He’s effective in pressing at the line of scrimmage which disrupts timing on the quarterback’s progression through routes. Lastly, he plays big and might start life in the NFL playing nickel to maximize his abilities. Barron’s impressive football IQ should allow him to blossom into a high performer early in his career which would be music to the ears of the team that drafts him.

*Stats and research provided courtesy of the Pro Football Network (PFN) and NFL.com

Main Photo: Ricardo B.
