He played his first two college seasons with the Houston Cougars before transferring to Texas for his Junior year. Golden started every game for Texas and emerged as their standout playmaker. He finished just shy of the thousand-yard mark and hauled in 9 TDs. He was also one of the top kick-returners in the country. Golden rose to the occasion for Texas in their biggest games of the season. He totaled 162 yards against Georgia in the SEC Championship and added a 149-yard performance in the College Football Playoffs against Arizona State. Golden’s massive season positioned him to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft and is expected to be one of the first receivers to hear their name called.

Strengths:

Matthew Golden is a twitched-up, explosive playmaker. His polished route-running ability and agility to get in and out of breaks on a dime are what makes him so intriguing. Golden, the former track star, displayed elite separation skills and high-level acceleration to hit top speed in a flash. Golden is a savvy route runner at all parts of the field. He does well setting up routes and snapping at the stem with a suddenness to create separation. Golden also has elite body control. He is flexible through all parts of his body and knows how to use this to break off his routes while maintaining balance and leverage. Golden has a good understanding of holes in zone coverage and won’t waste any movement to make himself an easy target.

Golden displays good ball skills. He is a hands catcher who can pluck balls out of the air and is always timing his leaps to high-point the football. Golden has good eye discipline and stays focused at the catch point. He has shown versatility in terms of where he can line up, which is a big plus for his transition to the next level. Golden tracks the ball well down the field and reacts late to the ball to prevent defenders from gaining leverage.

Golden’s ability after the catch is top-notch. As an experienced kick returner, he displays that kind of ability after the catch. Golden can outrun almost anyone with his pure speed but his acceleration is what’s most impressive. Golden can explode into space and does very well following his blocks. Golden’s bend and body control allow him to contort himself around defenders and stay in stride.

Weaknesses:

Golden is a compact receiver, lacking a bit in terms of length. He can at times shrink at the catch point and get outmuscled in contested catch situations. Golden could have issues playing through contact and he also went down too easily after the catch at times. He will have to put on some mass at the next level. Golden had some drop issues but his drop rate decreased significantly as his college career went on.

As a run blocker, Golden does not provide much value. He is willing, but his lack of length and overall power does not make him much of a factor.

Potential Team Fits

Dallas Cowboys

Pittsburgh Steelers

Baltimore Ravens

NFL Projection:

Matthew Golden should have a clean transition to the NFL. His separation skills and overall route running will play right away. Golden’s speed and body control are next level and teams will have a blast working him into their offense. Golden has a massive ceiling with the versatility he’s shown and his ability to step up in big games is special. He is a smart, instinctual receiver that I can see making an impact right away. Overall, I project Golden to become an elite receiver and his traits will work well at the next level.

Prospect Grade:

First Round Grade

Main Photo: Ricardo B.
