The Louisiana native saw limited playing time in his freshman season, playing in six games. Sorrell didn’t tally a sack but picked up eight total tackles and one tackle-for-loss. His 2022 campaign was a statement one in the DL rotation, starting 10 of his 13 games in the year.

He picked up 5.5 sacks with 44 tackles, accumulating nine TFLs and forcing his first career fumble. Sorrell was a full-time starter in 2023, starting all 14 of the team’s games and being a mainstay on the outside. His sack number dropped a bit to just four, but was still productive enough with 4.5 TFLs and 36 tackles. 2024 was his final and best statistical year, posting career-highs in sacks with six and TFLs with 10.5.

Accolades:

Honorable Mention All-Big 12 (2022)

Honorable Mention All-Big 12 (2023)

Strengths/Pros:

Sorrell’s main strengths are his above-average athleticism and his build to utilize it well enough around the edge. He’s a smart and forceful defender against the run, especially when asked to rotate around the line. His hands are quick on the outside, and he laterally disengages extremely quickly. He works well against inside runs but really shines when preventing boundary rushes, with solid closeout speed and violence at the attack point.

His arms are strong enough to swing linemen off their stances, and he maintains solid pad leverage with a consistently low base. Sorrell’s motor is fantastic over extended periods, finishing off plays and setting the edge well. He’s disciplined in containing plays and physical enough to chip tight ends in coverage effectively. His movement skills let him gain good leverage in the backfield early, often utilizing his speed to work past the line before the OL can counter.

Weaknesses/Cons:

Sorrell’s struggles mostly occur as a natural pass-rusher, mainly when designing a legitimate plan. He hesitates too much out of his stance and his stiffer hips don’t allow him to be a dominant speed rusher. He’s unable to sink far enough into his base to generate adequate power against larger tackles and he often fails to fully win reps after gaining initial positioning. Too often he’ll close the pocket momentarily but can’t work himself into space in the backfield.

His length is the biggest issue with his frame. He needs to get close to tackles to fully engage them. Sorrell’s finesse as a pass-rusher needs serious improvement, and he severely lacks defined pass-rush moves. He visibly doesn’t have much of a plan after initial contact, strictly using effort to try to create pressure. His hands need to stay violent longer through plays, locking out too early. His one big gripe in run defense is inconsistent instincts, biting the wrong way at times.

Potential Team Fits:

Pittsburgh Steelers

Los Angeles Chargers

Baltimore Ravens

NFL Projection:

Sorrell is likely to stick in the NFL for a number of years because of his impressive run-stopping ability alone. His pass-rushing skill set is still a work in progress but he offers enough against the run to be immediately playable. Steps will need to be taken if he’s to become a reliable pass rusher and it’s far from a guarantee he even reaches an average level in that area, but he has the foundational tools to make it a possibility.

Prospect Grade:

Late 4th Round

Film Exposures:

2024 vs. Kentucky

2024 vs. Clemson

2024 vs. Mississippi State

BONUS: 2024 Senior Bowl

Main Image: Aaron E.
