Fans are elated about how their teams can improve. Many of them will see their teams start new chapters with new head coaches and general managers. While questions remain, New York Jets fans are excited to see what awaits this offseason. Due to the arrival of new head coach Aaron Glenn, fans are hopeful for what can come in free agency. The Jets will have holes to fill across the board between the draft and free agency. Fortunately, a coach with Aaron Glenn’s reputation could bring some valuable pieces with him from the Detroit Lions. Although they won’t fix everything, these four could leave a nice mark on the roster.

Here are all of the #Lions top free agents that are set to hit the open market this offseason. Could a few follow Aaron Glenn over to the #Jets? 🧐

Carlton Davis, CB
Marcus Davenport, EDGE
Kevin Zeitler, IOL
Levi Onwuzurike, DL
Derrick Barnes, LB
John Cominsky, DL
Teddy…

— Paul Andrew Esden Jr (@BoyGreen25) January 22, 2025

Four Free Agents the Jets Should Reunite With Aaron Glenn

In January, the New York Jets ushered in a new era. Gone were the days of Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas. Now, the franchise is under the new leadership of head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. Due to the single-longest active streak without a playoff appearance, fans are elated to see the team change course.

As of this writing, the futures of both quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams remain up in the air. While there is a contingent who believe in the aging veterans, an executive with Mougey’s experience would appreciate nearly $45 million in cap savings to use on the rest of the roster. Despite optimism, fans shouldn’t expect Aaron Rodgers to be the long-term quarterback, especially with New York wanting a fresh start in this rebuild. However, that money can be used to help reunite Aaron Glenn with former Detroit Lions who’d be great fits in New York.

Dan Skipper, offensive tackle

The Jets offensive line is in a good spot right now. They have four starters locked in from Olu Fashanu at left tackle down to right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. But, with Morgan Moses heading into free agency right tackle is a priority. One option could be former Lions swing tackle Dan Skipper. A multi-tenured Lion, the journeyman tackle spent time on the Cowboys, the Patriots, the Broncos, the Raiders, the Texans, and the Colts. Skipper had been a reliable backup in Detroit behind starting tackles Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. Due to his familiarity with both Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, Skipper would be a solid option. His continuity with the staff and veteran experience will allow him to hold down the starting right tackle job until the Jets find a long-term partner opposite Olu Fashanu.

Dan Skipper Athletic Specimen and WR1 of the Detroit Lions pic.twitter.com/e7cETLKM69

— Pardon My Take (@PardonMyTake) December 15, 2024

Levi Onwurike, defensive tackle

The Jets defensive line remains a major need. Between the Haason Reddick disaster, Jermaine Johnson’s injury, and the lackluster performance of Javon Kinlaw, they need a reboot. Draft experts mocked Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham to New York multiple times. But, in case he’s taken beforehand, New York needs to add depth next to Quinnen Williams. One option could be to reunite Aaron Glenn with Levi Onwurike. His presence in the interior has been a difference-maker in the Lions defensive line the last two seasons. The veteran lineman has been dealing with injuries throughout his career. However, he’ll give them an experienced defensive tackle in the room to pair with Williams. The combined efforts of both men should be huge to help the Jets run defense.

Levi Onwuzurike with the first #Lions sack of the season!#LARvsDET | 📺 NBC pic.twitter.com/RT97OLVOOX

— Detroit Lions (@Lions) September 9, 2024

Tim Patrick, wide receiver

The wide receiver room could be undergoing an overhaul. The position group has no guarantees outside of Garrett Wilson and likely Malachi Corley next season. Due to the Aaron Rodgers decision, both Davante Adams and Allen Lazard could follow the quarterback out of the building. Intending to add depth to the group, New York makes sense for free agent Tim Patrick. The longtime Denver Broncos wide receiver worked his way up the depth chart before succumbing to leg injuries. After being released by Denver, Tim Patrick had a great comeback in Detroit. He shined in the second half of the season averaging 11.9 yards per catch and three touchdowns.

Tim Patrick, wow what a play!pic.twitter.com/PrLHyKECKw

— LionsFanReport (@lionsfanreport) December 15, 2024

With Darren Mougey in Denver during the entirety of Patrick’s tenure with the Broncos, Patrick could be a great value addition to New York’s offense. With Patrick’s presence gives New York a veteran third wide receiver mentoring Wilson and a rookie wide receiver. Due to Mougey’s background as a former wide receiver, New York could seriously consider drafting Tetairoa McMillan with the seventh overall pick. A duo of Wilson and McMillan gives Aaron Glenn an explosive young wide-receiver tandem for Engstrand to work with on offense.

Michael Badgley, placekicker

During a disastrous 2024 season, not even the biggest of pessimists expected kicker Greg Zuerlein to regress the way he did in 2024. Zuerlein went from an efficient 92.1% on all field goals in 2023 to 60% in 2024. The veteran kicker lost his momentum and left New York looking for answers. Fortunately, there will be options to move on. None as effective as kicker Michael Badgley. Before suffering a torn hamstring last year, Badgley became a valuable piece of the Lions success in 2023. The former Chargers kicker joined the team in 2022 and went 24 of 28 on all field goals since signing. In addition, Badgley went four-for-four on all field goals in the postseason in 2023. If Badgley is fully recovered from his injury, the Jets would be wise to sign the veteran to solidify their special teams unit.

Main Photo: [Kevin R.
