Selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft, Winston’s volatile style of play made him one of the most infamous quarterbacks in the league. Capable of making the best and worst plays you will ever watch, Winston isn’t a franchise quarterback but he’s more than capable of being a short-term starter or a high-level backup.

During his time as a part-time correspondent on Super Bowl Media Day, Winston asked Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley where he should play next year, and the 2,000-yard running back suggested his former team, the New York Giants. Winston later said he would “absolutely” join the Giants and “keep playing and do what I do best.”

However, this wasn’t the only time Jameis Winston hinted at a potential signing. When speaking with Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, the quarterback said he hopes to play for the legendary Super Bowl champion, and Reid responded by complementing the quarterback’s rocket arm.

Jameis Winston to Andy Reid: "I hope I can play for you one day. I know it's free agency."

Andy Reid to Winston: "I wish I can throw it as well as you do."

(🎥 @MarleahKCTV5)pic.twitter.com/0DNzuGYmc4 https://t.co/dUJGgkptU2

— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) February 4, 2025

Chiefs, Giants Could Fight Over Jameis Winston

The Case For the Giants

For the sake of this article, we’ll assume the Giants and Chiefs are both at least passively interested in Jameis Winston, as both teams could use help at the quarterback position. While Kansas City is just looking for a backup, the Giants could use a short-term starter. After the Daniel Jones Era ended in disaster, New York is back at square one in their search for a franchise quarterback. Unfortunately, they might not be able to draft one, as they currently hold the third-overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Normally, a top-three pick would give a team a decent shot at a franchise quarterback. Unfortunately for the Giants, however, the 2025 quarterback class is notoriously weak and New York is behind two quarterback-needy teams in the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns. Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders are the only players who could possibly go in the top 15, and both players could be off the board by the time the Giants are on the clock. If that happens, New York could use Jameis Winston as a bridge quarterback.

While Winston’s erratic play can get him in trouble, it can also lead to stretches of remarkable performances. The Florida State product never shies away from making aggressive throws downfield, which makes him a natural match for budding superstar Malik Nabers. While Winston probably can’t guide this team to the playoffs, he should welcome an opportunity to start and re-establish his value in a year’s time.

The Case For the Chiefs

Obviously, Jameis Winston will never beat out Patrick Mahomes for the starting job. However, the opportunity to develop behind an elite offensive mind in Andy Reid might be too good to ignore. Even if Winston starts for the Giants, everyone involved knows he’d be nothing more than a short-term fix to a long-term problem. By signing with the Chiefs, Winston will accept life as a backup but could develop safer practice tendencies to limit his turnover-worthy plays.

Winston accepted life as a backup when he signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2020 and the Cleveland Browns in 2024, so he probably won’t hold out for a starting job in 2025. The Chiefs, meanwhile, could use a better backup quarterback after the Carson Wentz experiment didn’t go to plan. While he only played in one meaningless game, the former second-overall pick looked hopeless in the Week 18 loss to the Denver Broncos. Winston would be an upgrade and should draw interest from both teams when the legal tampering period officially begins.

Main Photo: Tommy Gilligan – Imagn Images

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston will be a free agent at the start of the league year and could have two major suitors.

[16,20
7811,7809,116,7300
post-214780","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chiefs","category-giants","tag-chiefs-featured","tag-cleveland-browns-news","tag-jameis-winston","tag-new-york-giants-news
["GET
