After four solid seasons with Kansas State, Howard transferred to Ohio State and had the best season of his career, completing 73% of his passes for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 10 games. His completion percentage, yardage, and touchdowns led the conference and made him one of the best prospects in an admittedly weak quarterback draft class.

Putting up strong numbers is one thing, but the film is what matters at the end of the day. Howard plays well in a clean pocket and has an above-average, but not elite, arm that can make most NFL throws. However, he falls apart under pressure and struggles to adapt to defenses post-snap. Will Howard has the tools to succeed in the right environment and the Ohio State product is developed enough to be a primary backup right away. Seeing as he likely won’t go off the board until the third or fourth round, a team like the Baltimore Ravens or Los Angeles Chargers could select him.

Chargers, Ravens Could Draft Ohio State Quarterback Will Howard

The Los Angeles Chargers have a great quarterback in Justin Herbert, but they don’t have a great Plan B if he suffers an unfortunate injury. The team made the playoffs last year, but they wouldn’t have done it with a lesser quarterback under center. While they had great tackles and a breakout rookie in Ladd McConkey, the poor interior offensive line and lack of a second weapon left Herbert with no margin of error. If last year’s backup, Taylor Heinicke, had to start games, the Chargers would’ve been lucky to win five games.

Fortunately, the Chargers have $63 million in cap space to address the glaring needs at guard, wide receiver, tight end, and edge defender. These signings can make life easier for Herbert in 2025, but Los Angeles should invest in a better backup. Will Howard isn’t the flashiest prospect in the draft, but a quarterback guru like head coach Jim Harbaugh should be able to mold him into one of the league’s better backups. While nobody can replace Herbert over a full 17-game sample, Howard could keep the ship afloat if he needs to fill in for a few weeks.

Backing Up Lamar Jackson

Just like with the Chargers, Will Howard will never win the Baltimore Ravens starting job without an injury. However, football is a violent sport and injuries occur all the time. Lamar Jackson has stayed healthy in each of the past two seasons, but he missed a combined 10 games in the two campaigns before that. Had he missed time in 2024, the Ravens would’ve had to turn to longtime journeyman Josh Johnson. Johnson was never good enough to stick with a team, and he’s well past his physical prime at 38 years old.

The Ravens play in one of the NFL’s most competitive divisions, and they can’t afford a short-term Lamar Jackson injury to interfere with their odds of winning the AFC North. Will Howard doesn’t have Jackson’s style of play, but the Ohio State product could fill in and keep the offense moving under recently extended offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

Main Photo: Adam Cairns – Imagn Images

Ohio State Will Howard is not a first-round prospect, but the redshirt Senior made a name for himself last year during his first season with the Buckeyes.
