Legendary Saints quarterback Drew Brees joined the show to discuss the Super Bowl in New Orleans, among other things. One notable topic of conversation was the Saints head-coaching vacancy.

Saints fans are likely worried after seeing their team get passed on by at least two head coach targets (Mike Vrabel, Aaron Glenn) in favor of other teams this cycle. With New Orleans now the only team without a head coach, the topic naturally came up during the interview.

Brees was asked directly by Schefter whether or not he’d had any involvement in the team’s search for a new head coach. The former Super Bowl winner stumbled for a second before saying: “I always have conversations. I have conversations with everybody in that organization about any number of topics.”

Now with a face dominated by a huge grin, Brees continued: “I lend my expertise or recommendations when asked.”

Drew Brees Hints at Involvement in Saints Head Coach Search

Legendary QB @drewbrees has thoughts on the Saints and what they should do to fill their head coaching vacancy.

🎧 https://t.co/uFLdwwOukt pic.twitter.com/DTdLIB2mTh

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 28, 2025

When pressed on what direction he thought the team should look though, Brees was predictably more vague.

Firstly, Brees gave credit to the “foundation” that has been put in place by general manager Mickey Loomis and even former head coach Sean Payton. Brees suggested that the Saints were subsequently not in need of “wholesale change.”

“We felt we built the foundation for great culture, a great team, great core pieces to that.”

“Look, I still think they have great core pieces in place on the offensive side and the defensive side. It was unfortunate we were decimated by injury last year, especially with a lot of our, you know, explosive playmakers.”

Clearly not wanting to give anything away, Brees continued to slalom as he rounded out his answer.

“And so look, is that scheme something we want to stick with? Are we going a more defensive route?” he continued. “I don’t know who it’s going to be. I feel like we’ve got some good candidates…Everybody’s going to put their own twist on kind of the, you know, the foundation of the culture. But man, I feel like we’ve got some great core pieces in place.”

When you piece together the whole interview, it would seem that Brees has more knowledge of the Saints head coach search than he’s letting on. But the Saints legend appears upbeat about the team’s situation, so maybe fans should be too.

The Saints conducted an in-person interview with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who seems to be the frontrunner after Mike McCarthy pulled himself out of consideration.

Main Photo: Stephen Lew – Imagn Images

January 28th episode of “The Adam Schefter Podcast” featured a very special guest.
