The Dallas Cowboys<\/strong> began Organized Team Activities this week and received some unfavorable news. Dallas-area beat writer and radio personality\u00a0Mike Fisher<\/a> <\/strong>of 105.3 The Fan reported that third-year free agent defensive end David Irving<\/strong> is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL\u2019s performance enhancing drug policy.<\/p>\n

Reportedly, Irving received a deal to endorse a supplement that contained a substance outlawed by the league. Irving is determined to appeal the pending suspension. The potential fallout can be viewed two ways.<\/p>\n

Growth Stopped<\/strong><\/h3>\n

First, it could be a huge setback for\u00a0Irving who had begun to come on strong in\u00a02016. The 6\u20197\u201d 273 pound 23-year-old finished the season with four sacks, five passes defensed and four forced fumbles. His development could be cut short with the time missed.<\/p>\n

Opportunity Knocks\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Secondly, the suspension will give several young players a chance to earn significant playing time\u00a0early in the season. Players like Taco Charlton<\/strong> and\u00a0Charles Tapper\u00a0<\/strong>will get plenty of opportunities with Irving missing from defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli\u2019s<\/strong> cupboard.<\/p>\n

Benson Mayowa<\/a><\/strong> and the newly acquired Damontre Moore<\/a> <\/strong>could also benefit from Irving\u2019s absence. Ultimately, Irving was not likely to earn a starting role with this year\u2019s team but his availability was considered a decided edge.<\/p>\n

The team hopes he\u2019s able to win his appeal and miss a minimal number of games but they will not hold their breath. The Cowboys have an abundance of young talent that will allow them to remain competitive along the defensive front. The team\u2019s biggest concern will be keeping everyone else healthy, if he is suspended.<\/p>\n
