The second-year receiver\u00a0out of <strong>The University of\u00a0Maryland<\/strong> came into last season with relatively low expectations as a fifth-round pick, but now\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be the Vikings\u00a0biggest offensive weapon due to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?search=Adrian+Peterson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adrian Peterson<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Stefon Diggs&#8217; Hot Start Could Mean He Is Minnesota Vikings Best Receiver Since Randy Moss<\/h2>\n<p>Despite being inactive for the first three games of his rookie year, Diggs took advantage of every opportunity he had. On Oct. 4, 2015 Diggs emerged after getting his first start against the\u00a0<strong>Denver Broncos <\/strong>as\u00a0<strong style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?search=Charles+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Johnson<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>was<strong style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>out with a rib injury.\u00a0He<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0finished the game with six receptions for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">87 yards <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on 10 targets (per Pro-Football Reference), and burned the Bronco\u2019s elite defense several times. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Against the\u00a0<strong>Kansas City Chiefs<\/strong>,\u00a0one week later, Diggs had his first <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yard game, amassing seven receptions for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">129 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yards on nine targets. Then, in just his third game against the <strong>Detroit Lions<\/strong>, Diggs picked up<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 108 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yards and his first touchdown<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was a brilliant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36-yard catch. To score the touchdown Diggs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extended for the ball after a well-executed double move.\u00a0Diggs&#8217; fourth game,\u00a0at <\/span><b>Soldier Field<\/b>\u00a0against the <strong>Chicago Bears<\/strong>,\u00a0saw him<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0tie the game with less than two minutes remaining\u00a0after\u00a0a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yard catch-and-run. That play gave Diggs\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receiving yards on the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Stefon Diggs vs. Randy Moss<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through those first four games, Diggs averaged<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 105-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yards per game and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16.8 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yards per catch.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MossRa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Randy Moss<\/strong><\/a> averaged<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16.1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yards per catch and 68-yards per game in his first four games. While Diggs trailed off by the end of the year, he finished his rookie campaign with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">52 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">catches,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 720 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yards (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13.9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yards-per-catch), and four scores. Moss had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">catches (on 40 more targets) for 1,313 yards (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yards per catch) and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> touchdowns. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moss had a stronger\u00a0rookie year compared to Diggs, but he also\u00a0had more opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never satisfied, Diggs has repeatedly stated he wants more from himself, and it has translated on the field. After a strong off-season in 2015, Diggs had an even better training camp this year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a feat many would have thought impossible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Week one against the <strong>Tennessee Titans<\/strong>, Diggs racked up more than a hundred yards with quarterback<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HillSh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaun Hill<\/a> <\/strong>throwing him the ball. He could have even had another 30 yards and a score if not for a miss-fire by Hill. During Sunday Night Football, in the Vikings\u00a0home opener against the rival\u00a0<strong>Green Bay Packers<\/strong>, Diggs had a ridiculous nine catches for 182 yards and a touchdown. That was with quarterback<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Bradford<\/a><\/strong>, making his first start in purple, tossing the ball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the 14-17 victory against the Packers and with Peterson\u2019s torn meniscus, Diggs has the opportunity to cement himself as the\u00a0top offensive weapon on the Vikings.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the game, <strong>Cris Collinsworth<\/strong> and <strong>Al Michaels<\/strong> raved over Diggs, even going so far as to jokingly compare him to <strong>Pittsburgh Steelers<\/strong> wide receiver<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?search=Antonio+Brown&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Brown<\/a><\/strong>. While such comparisons may be premature, Diggs is clearly a superstar in the making, and without a doubt the biggest draft day steal at wide-out since the aforementioned Brown.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Defying History<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back at the receivers the Vikings have\u00a0drafted since Moss, a strong case\u00a0could be made that Diggs is\u00a0the best of the bunch. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurlNa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nate Burleson<\/a><\/strong>, a third-round pick in 2003, only had 455 yards and two scores his first year. Although he did have a 1,000-yard season his second year with<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CulpDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daunte Culpepper<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>as the signal caller,\u00a0Burleson never\u00a0reached 900 yards again after that season. The next wide receiver drafted by the Vikings was notorious bust <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Troy Williamson<\/a><\/strong>. After that,<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RiceSi01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Rice<\/a><\/strong> was taken in the second round of the 2007 draft. Rice\u00a0had a nice year in 2009 with Hall of Fame quarterback\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FavrBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Favre<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at the helm, but Favre\u00a0is far superior to Vikings quarterback\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BridTe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teddy Bridgewater<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BridTe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">,<\/a> who was the Vikings signal caller in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlliAu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aundrae Allison<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> Chandler Williams <\/strong>and<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JohnJa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaymar Johnson<\/a><\/strong> were all late round picks with little production. The next big name receiver drafted by the Vikings was<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarvPe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Percy Harvin<\/a><\/strong>, who, although he had a few good years in Minnesota, was ultimately a disappointment after being the 2009 Rookie of the Year.<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WrigJa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarius Wright<\/a><\/strong>, drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 draft, earned a second contract in Minnesota, but has been beaten out by local man and former undrafted free agent,<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThieAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Thielen<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ChilGr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Childs<\/a><\/strong>, who had\u00a0tremendous\u00a0potential, never played a down\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to a devastating injury suffered during his first training camp. The last wide receiver drafted by the Vikings before Diggs? <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PattCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cordarrelle Patterson<\/a><\/strong>, a talented\u00a0kick returner who\u00a0has been unable to make the impact on offense that is expected from a first round pick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Lofty Expectations<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, Diggs could easily break 1,000 yards. This holds true given the Vikings quarterback situation because regardless of who is playing quarterback, Diggs is\u00a0the best offensive weapon, especially with Adrian Peterson injured.\u00a0Diggs&#8217;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 285 receiving yards currently lead the league, putting him on pace for well over 2,000. While this is an unrealistic expectation, 1300-1600 looks quite attainable.
