Patrick Mahomes is going to have more tests today. X-rays were negative. He is considered week-to-week.”

About halfway through the fourth quarter of KC’s 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Mahomes took a brutal hit from a pair of Browns defenders, forcing him to limp off the field. Mahomes would not return to the game. While Mahomes had both of his ankles taped, backup quarterback Carson Wentz closed out the game for the Chiefs.

What does the Mahomes injury mean for the AFC?

Regardless of what the numbers might say, Patrick Mahomes is still the best quarterback in the NFL. Therefore, the Chiefs losing him for any extended period would be disastrous for their season. This is not meant to insult Carson Wentz, who was a Pro Bowler once upon a time. But, the Chiefs will only go as far as Patrick Mahomes takes them, especially in what could be considered a down year for the reigning Super Bowl champs.

Though KC has already clinched a playoff spot and won its division, the Chiefs are still in a tight race with the Buffalo Bills for the number one seed in the AFC. With the Bills owning the head-to-head tiebreaker over Kansas City, the Chiefs might need to win out if they want a home-field advantage in the playoffs.

This is where things get dicey. The Chiefs’ next three games are against teams that have either clinched a playoff berth or are close to clinching a playoff berth. Meanwhile, the Bills finish their season with two games against the 3-11 New England Patriots and a matchup with the 4-10 New York Jets. The Bills will probably win all three of their games, so Kansas City needs to ensure they win their next three games also.

What should the Chiefs do?

Patrick Mahomes is an intense competitor. That means that if there’s even a slight chance that he’s good to go, then he will be playing in week 16. Unfortunately, that might not be a good long-term decision.

If Mahomes plays and his injury worsens, then KC’s dreams of winning a third consecutive Super Bowl go out the window. On the other hand, if Mahomes doesn’t play, then there’s a strong possibility that the Chiefs lose their next game (a home matchup against the Houston Texans), further hurting their chances to lock up the one seed in the AFC.

Taking into consideration the fact that the Texans are a dome-based team that has already clinched a playoff spot, it might make sense to rest Patrick Mahomes in week 16, even if he claims to be healthy enough to play. In the playoffs, the Chiefs are much better off with a healthy Patrick Mahomes on the road than Carson Wentz at home.

There’s no guarantee that the Bills will even catch the Chiefs. With that being said, it’s not worth risking Mahomes’ long-term health just to guarantee most of your postseason games are played at home. KC should rest Mahomes this week and have him ready to win the last two games of the season.

Let’s be honest though, Patrick Mahomes will likely start against the Texans this Sunday. Let’s just hope he can keep that injured ankle from worsening.

Main Photo: [Scott Galvin] – USA Today Sports

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is considered week-to-week after suffering an ankle injury in week 15.

[36,16
122,7466,7326,1576,2186
post-204937","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-news","category-chiefs","tag-kansas-city-chiefs","tag-kansas-city-chiefs-news","tag-kansas-city-chiefs-roster","tag-patrick-mahomes","tag-patrick-mahomes-ii
["GET
