In his first season as a Bear, Mack delivered an unforgettable performance, recording 12.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, and 47 total tackles. While his time in Chicago didn’t yield a championship, it left a lasting impression.

Fast forward to last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, and Mack proved he still has plenty left in the tank, recording 17 sacks, five forced fumbles, and 74 total tackles. A return to Chicago could provide the spark the Bears need.

Why the Chargers May Move On

The Chargers have a similar amount of cap space as the Bears with around $76 million. However, they have a lot more high-profile free agents to re-sign like Asante Samuel Jr., J.K. Dobbins, Josh Palmer, Kristian Fulton, Poona Ford, and Bradley Bozeman.

They also have two highly talented edge rushers in Joey Bosa and Tuli Tuipulotu, so re-signing a 33-year-old pass rusher who’ll likely demand a high salary puts the Chargers in a tough situation.

Addressing the Bears’ Defensive Woes

The Bears desperately need help getting to the quarterback. This season, no Bears player ranks in the top 20 in pass rush win rate, and their leading sack-getter, second-year defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr., has just five sacks. Not to mention the Bears are one of the worst teams in the NFL in total sacks.

While free agency and the draft will present options, bringing back Mack would not only bolster the defense but also energize the fanbase. His experience and proven track record could provide an immediate upgrade to the pass rush.

Weighing the Costs

Realistically, the Bears would only want to bring back Khalil Mack if it’s on the cheaper end for the team. At 34 years old next season, Mack would likely command a contract in the range of $16 million annually—reasonable compared to top-edge rushers like Nick Bosa ($34 million APY) or the Bears’ own Montez Sweat ($24 million APY). While younger options like Josh Sweat, Chase Young, and Azeez Ojulari will be available, Mack’s familiarity with Chicago and his leadership on defense could make him an appealing option.

Return of the Mack

Many Bears fans have long dreamed of Khalil Mack returning to Soldier Field, with some even calling for a trade before this season. Now, with no draft compensation required, the opportunity is there to reunite with one of the franchise’s most beloved players. Mack himself has expressed his fondness for Chicago and his appreciation for his time as a Bear.

If Ryan Poles wants to address a pressing need while delivering a sentimental victory for the fanbase, bringing back Mack is the right move.

Khalil Mack calls his four years with the Bears a “special time” in his life.

We feel the same, @FiftyDeuce.

📹: via @chargers https://t.co/DxM9Y5Drmf pic.twitter.com/TxofQWppkm

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) March 17, 2022

Main Image: Kirby Lee – USA Today Sports

No need for a jersey swap; Khalil Mack needs to come back to Chicago and end his career as a Bears legend.

[23,18,36
33071,7642,42,7403,358
post-204577","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bears","category-chargers","category-nfl-news","tag-2025-nfl-free-agency","tag-chargers-featured","tag-chicago-bears","tag-chicago-bears-news","tag-khalil-mack
["GET
