The Chicago Bears have a lot of needs to address this offseason, and with over $80 million in cap space,<\/a> the time to spend the money is now\u2014especially with Caleb Williams trending as the franchise’s future at quarterback.<\/a> At the top of their priority list is finding a dominant edge rusher, and a reunion with fan-favorite Khalil Mack could be the perfect solution.<\/p>\n

The Case for a Khalil Mack Reunion in Chicago<\/h2>\n

Revisiting Khalil Mack’s Impact in Chicago<\/h3>\n

Bears fans still remember the excitement of the blockbuster trade that brought Khalil Mack to Chicago,<\/a> a move that reinvigorated the fanbase with hope. In his first season as a Bear, Mack delivered an unforgettable performance, recording 12.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, and 47 total tackles.<\/a> While his time in Chicago didn\u2019t yield a championship, it left a lasting impression.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, and Mack proved he still has plenty left in the tank, recording 17 sacks, five forced fumbles, and 74 total tackles. A return to Chicago could provide the spark the Bears need.<\/p>\n

They also have two highly talented edge rushers in Joey Bosa and Tuli Tuipulotu,<\/a> so re-signing a 33-year-old pass rusher who’ll likely demand a high salary puts the Chargers in a tough situation.<\/p>\n

Addressing the Bears’ Defensive Woes<\/h3>\n

The Bears desperately need help getting to the quarterback. This season, no Bears player ranks in the top 20 in pass rush win rate,<\/a> and their leading sack-getter, second-year defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr., has just five sacks. Not to mention the Bears are one of the worst teams in the NFL in total sacks.<\/a><\/p>\n

While free agency and the draft will present options, bringing back Mack would not only bolster the defense but also energize the fanbase. His experience and proven track record could provide an immediate upgrade to the pass rush.<\/p>\n

Weighing the Costs<\/h3>\n

Realistically, the Bears would only want to bring back Khalil Mack if it’s on the cheaper end for the team. At 34 years old next season, Mack would likely command a contract in the range of $16 million annually\u2014reasonable compared to top-edge rushers like Nick Bosa ($34 million APY) or the Bears\u2019 own Montez Sweat ($24 million APY). While younger options like Josh Sweat, Chase Young, and Azeez Ojulari will be available, Mack\u2019s familiarity with Chicago and his leadership on defense could make him an appealing option.<\/p>\n
