All their other issues stem from these two. They’re supplemental to the primary problem. Ironically, as the NFL trade deadline approaches, the Cowboys are going about solving these problems like they did during the offseason. Namely, by doing nothing at all.

However, the Cowboys could still decide to fix their problems by looking outside the organization. If a Cowboys trade were to happen, here’s what it could look like.

No Cowboys Trade in the Works to Fix Run Defense and Run Game

Cowboys Must Acquire a New RB

Although Rico Dowdle has stepped it up in his execution over the past few games, there are still concerns about whether he’ll stay healthy. If that’s the worry, then the Cowboys need to bring in a new running back. Ezekiel Elliott just isn’t cutting it anymore.

With an average of 2.1 yards a carry against the Lions, it’s clear that his production on the field isn’t enough to increase the Cowboys run game. While the Cowboys drag their feet about activating Dalvin Cook, they can look outside of the organization. Trading for a running back could push the program to where it needs to be. That only happens if the Cowboys and Jerry Jones are willing to accept that kind of outside help.

Possible Cowboys Trade for a Right Tackle

Although there are a number of problems with the current Cowboys offensive line, Terence Steele is the one who struggles the most. While the rookie Tyler Guyton has also had a tough time, he gets more slack because of his newness to the team. Zack Martin has had several minor injuries this season too, so strengthening that right side of the ball is imperative.

Bringing in another, seasoned player for the O-Line could turn this all around for the Cowboys. Especially if they could pick someone up that has excellent blocking for the run. For a running back to have success, they have to have a hole. That work starts with the offensive line.

The Need for Another Defensive Tackle

Mazi Smith has stepped up in a big way recently, but he’s still got a way to go. The Cowboys originally added Jordan Phillips and Joseph Linval to the roster for depth in that position. However, Phillips suffered injuries early in the season, creating another need at DT.

Right now, the Cowboys’ defense is being pushed around by big, aggressive offensive linemen. To prevent that, they’ll need a big, aggressive defensive tackle to hold down the fort. They aren’t going to be able to get them any other way besides with a trade.

One More Powerful Linebacker Could Make the Difference

If the Cowboys trade for one more linebacker, that could truly be the difference maker for the season. The addition of Eric Kendricks has been pivotal for this defense. He’s always making tackles and is at the top of the league for it. Having a second linebacker with that kind of speed and ferocity makes a difference.

DeMarvion Overshown has done well, but again, he’s young. There’s a lot of room for growth with him. Bringing in another guy specializing in run defense gives Overshown someone to learn from while improving the defensive structure.

These Cowboys Trades Could Help the Young Group

The Cowboys are a very young team. There are benefits, like longevity and building a program that can sustain itself, but there are also cons. Right now, the Cowboys are seeing a lot more negatives than positives. This is where veterans can step in and shift the program’s direction. Hopefully, the Cowboys management will have that humility to accept help, before it’s too late.

Main Photo: Barry Reeger-Imagn Images

A Dallas Cowboys trade could repair the entire season.
