Hockenson&#8217;s Absence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Minnesota Vikings will go into the 2024 season without their star tight end. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/news\/t-j-hockenson-injury-update-vikings-havent-really-put-a-timeline-on-my-return-from-knee-surgery-te-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Hockenson tore his ACL and MCL<\/a> in Week 16, putting the start of his season in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">major<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0jeopardy with no\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">real<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0timeline for a return. The Vikings have recently signed a veteran in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TonyRo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Tonyan<\/a>, paid a solid amount of money for\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hockenson\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0backup in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/O\/OlivJo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Oliver<\/a>, have what Kevin\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">O\u2019Connell<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0says is the best third-string tight end in the league in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MundJo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Mundt<\/a> and a young late-round draft pick from a few years ago in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MuseNi00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Muse<\/a>. All of them could fill in for Hockenson at some point until his return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Vikings <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2024\/05\/14\/ranking-nfc-north-offenses-by-position\/\" target=\"_self\">led the league<\/a> in play-action attempts last year, and without Hockenson, expect that number to get even higher. While Hockenson got <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a lot<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of his targets through play action, he sets himself apart from other tight ends with his ability to line up as a receiver and get open on the outside.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The tight ends behind him on the depth chart<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">can\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0do that as well, and if they need manufactured targets lined up as a pure tight end, then play action would be the easiest to do that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Vikings Tight Ends Who Could Step Up In Hockenson&#8217;s Absence<\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Johnny Mundt<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Signing with Minnesota three offseasons ago from Los Angeles, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">O\u2019Connell<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0raves about him every chance he gets, and it makes sense\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">considering<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they\u2019ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0been in the same organizations\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">dating back to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a02020. Mundt took over the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">main<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> receiving role at the tight end position when Hockenson got injured, with his first game as a starter being Sunday Night Football against the Packers with Jaren Hall at quarterback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> If you were successful in your attempt to forget about anything that happened in that game (I\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> blame you!)\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mundy<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was the second-leading receiver with four catches, 39 yards, and the lone touchdown of that game. Mundt will almost certainly be one of the tight ends that gets\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">major<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0snaps this year<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and when<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0he does,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he\u2019ll<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0be a steady and solid presence that cannot threaten the defense vertically with speed or\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">burst,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0but rather a chain-moving and solid blocking, reliable starter.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kevin O\u2019Connell just praised TE Johnny Mundt, calling him \u201cthe best 3rd TE in the NFL.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mundt and O\u2019Connell spent time together in LA before their reunion in Minnesota. <\/p>\n<p>Mundt seems to be a \ud83d\udd12 for the roster. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vV2acCFnX7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/vV2acCFnX7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; VikingzFanPage (@vikingzfanpage) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vikingzfanpage\/status\/1690488687727935488?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 12, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Josh Oliver<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Josh Oliver was the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Viking&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> first signing an offseason ago, receiving a three-year, $21 million deal. He was signed almost purely as a run-blocker, and his receiving stats reflect that\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0only 213 receiving yards and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> two <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">touchdowns. In 2022, PFF graded him as their best run blocker at the tight end position in the league. He was signed to be the yin to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hockenson\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0yang, but the hope is that he can give more than just his high-level blocking. He fits the bill athletically<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0just needs to translate to stats. Tonyan was signed just a few days ago but will have every chance to compete for a roster spot and play early on. A season ago with the Bears, Tonyan only put up 112 yards on the season, a massive decline from his previous three seasons in Green Bay, where he put up multiple 400-yard seasons, the highlight of which came in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2020<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0where he had 11 touchdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0unfair to have those expectations on him, but looking for a pure one-for-one replacement for Hockenson, Tonyan is the most like him. A field-stretching F-tight end that can make the defense honor the deep middle of the field. The Vikings are betting on 2023 being an anomaly compared to his past few seasons, and if\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they\u2019re<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> right, they may have landed a solid role player for this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nick Muse<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The longshot of this group to get any real snaps this season, Muse was a seventh-round pick in 2022. He played in the season finale in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Detroit<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0where he caught one pass for 22 yards, and PFF gave Muse an 89.2 grade.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0about as small of a sample size as you can get, but if Muse looks like\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0belong playing in the preseason against the backups, that may be a sign he gets some real run as a starter come week one.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0got<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0great speed and agility for a tight end, and if he can take a third-year jump like so many NFL players\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">do<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, he could be a reliable backup.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">#8 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RAS?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#RAS<\/a> TE 2022<\/p>\n<p>Nick Muse is a TE prospect in the 2022 draft class. He scored a 8.79 RAS out of a possible 10.00.
