The first: a dynamic, high-powered offense that clicks on all cylinders \u2013 especially in the Superdome. The other? A leaky, inexperienced defense that struggles to tackle and cover. He is 38 and not getting any younger.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It is important for the front office to surround Brees with the necessary talent to contend for a\u00a0title while Brees is still playing at a high-level. Brees has proven that he can\u00a0channel his inner Rumpelstiltskin and spin straw into gold on the offensive end. He has lost some of his most valuable weapons &#8212; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GrahJi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Graham<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ColsMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marques Colston<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StilKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Stills<\/a><\/strong> &#8212; and still managed to conduct one of the NFL\u2019s most electrifying offenses. He should be able to keep it up, even after New Orleans dealt yet another one of Brees\u2019s toys,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CookBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandin Cooks<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ThomMi02,ThomMi05&amp;search=Michael+Thomas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Thomas<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s incredible rookie season deemed Cooks expendable while the Saints signed speedster <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GinnTe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Ginn<\/a> Jr.<\/strong> to replace him. They also have the reliable hands of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SneaWi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie Snead<\/a><\/strong> IV on the roster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">New Orleans\u2019 defense has been historically bad, but that is\u00a0not for a lack of trying on account of the front office in free agency.<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ByrdJa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jairus Byrd<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BrowBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Browner<\/a><\/strong> were inked to sizable deals, but because of injuries, regression, or both, they didn\u2019t live up to those contracts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The front office has done an admirable job in filling holes in free agency this offseason. They re-signed <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FairNi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Fairley<\/a><\/strong> to a four-year deal to solidify the interior line. They brought in linebackers <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/O\/OkafAl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Okafor<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KleiAJ00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A.J. Klein<\/a><\/strong> and they are also close to finalizing a deal with former Notre Dame standout <strong>Manti Te\u2019o<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I am told by a source that free-agent LB Mantei Te&#8217;o is close to a deal with the Saints, could sign Tuesday. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AzZqvNTpCi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/AzZqvNTpCi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dan Graziano (@DanGrazianoESPN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanGrazianoESPN\/status\/843871298753187841\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 20, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These moves give New Orleans depth at linebacker, but none of the players brought in are difference makers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That brings us to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ButlMa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Butler<\/a><\/strong>. The Saints have been in discussions with the Patriots cornerback for nearly two weeks now, but Butler\u2019s first-round tender is holding the deal up. As a restricted free agent, if Butler signs with the Saints, they\u2019d be forced to give up their first round draft pick (#11 overall) if the Patriots do not match it. That is something the Saints are unwilling to do. In the past few drafts, the general notion surrounding the Saints was that the defense needed to be improved. However, in two of the past three drafts, they\u2019ve opted to choose an offensive player with their first pick. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeatAn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrus Peat<\/a><\/strong> was selected in 2015 and Cooks was selected in 2014. Their 2016 selection, defensive tackle <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RankSh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sheldon Rankins<\/a><\/strong>, missed the first six games due to a leg injury, but played well upon his return. The Saints need to repeat what they did last season and draft defensive players in round one of the draft.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are three glaring holes on the defensive side of the ball that need to be filled: edge rusher, cornerback, and linebacker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JordCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Jordan<\/a><\/strong> was sensational this past season, but another edge rusher would take some pressure off of him because he would see less double teams. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BreaDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delvin Breaux<\/a><\/strong> battled injuries all season, but when he is healthy, he is someone who can slow down bigger receivers like the NFC South\u2019s<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneJu02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julio Jones<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=EvanMi20,EvanMi00,EvanMi21&amp;search=Mike+Evans&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Evans<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BenjKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kelvin Benjamin<\/a><\/strong>. Even if the Saints acquire Butler, cornerback should be in play with questions about Breaux\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Luckily for the Saints, this draft is brimming with defensive talent.
