He was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and committed to Oregon then flipped to Arizona State. As a true freshman at Arizona State, he didn’t see the field much. It was the COVID year, and he only had six catches in three games.

2021 was still a bit of a letdown, he had 12 catches in five games for 154 yards. With two disappointing campaigns in a row, Wilson transferred to Florida State to bolster his draft prospects.

All things considered, that was the right move. Wilson put together a career year in 2022, with 43 receptions for 897 yards. Twenty yards a reception isn’t too shabby. Pairing that with five touchdowns was enough for Second Team All-ACC in 2022. Wilson could have entered the 2023 NFL draft but decided to return for his senior year.

Wilson had more receptions per game in 2023 with just over four a game, but in only ten games he failed to meet his yardage or touchdown totals. He was Third Team All-ACC and declared for the 2024 NFL draft after the season.

Watch: Jayden Daniels Film Study

Strengths

Enormous size makes him a walking mismatch

Deceptive long speed separates with each stride

Catch radius of approximately a small neighborhood

Dominant run blocker on corners

Frame to box out defenders with the ball in the air

Weaknesses

Lots of drops on film, whether from QB play or concentration

Doesn’t always play with his full size

Clunky route runner

Accelerates like a 1985 Chevy Silverado

Doesn’t manipulate defenders during his deep routes, just runs

NFL Comparison: Harold Carmichael still figuring it out

Projected Draft Capital: Top-100 pick

Team Fits: Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills

Last Word on Johnny Wilson 2024 NFL Draft Outlook

Johnny Wilson isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. If a coach is creative with how they use him and play to his strengths in the middle of the field he can be a useful weapon at the next level. If they relegate him to a pseudo-tight-end role, he’ll be a fan favorite that doesn’t make the impact we hope for. He has all the talent, and you can’t teach size. Teams looking for a one-of-a-kind weapon after the first round should look Wilson’s way.

More NFL Draft:

Johnny Wilson Film Study Video

Cody Schrader Draft Profile

Johnny Wilson Dynasty Outlook

Wilson’s fantasy gold is likely to come in the red zone, but it’s concerning he only had two touchdowns in 2023. A lot of that was because Jordan Travis was throwing prayer balls to Keon Coleman, but the concern still remains. If he finds himself with a creative offensive coordinator, he’ll be a favorite target in the back of the second. If he ends up buried on a depth chart in an ugly system, he’ll be a third-round pick in rookie drafts.

Main Photo Credit: Rich Storry-USA TODAY Sports

Johnny Wilson is the tallest receiver eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft.
