Bethea, 32, was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday along with wide receiver <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitTo02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torrey Smith<\/a><\/strong> (who has since signed with the Philadelphia Eagles). His age surely doesn\u2019t help his case, as Bethea will turn 33 before the beginning of the 2017 NFL season and the 49ers are looking to start a bit of a youth movement to help replenish their depleted secondary (stemming from the early-retirement exodus that plagued them prior to last season).<\/p>\n<p>Drafted in the 6<sup>th<\/sup> round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, Bethea helped the Colts secondary manage the NFL\u2019s second-ranked pass defense in his rookie season. He went on to win Super Bowl XLI in the same year. After eight seasons with the Colts, Bethea signed a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers in 2014.
