This week we\u2019ll review how well the Steelers defensive line fared in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Pittsburgh Steelers 2016 Positional Overview: Defensive Line<\/h3>\n<h3>2016 Review<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even after an injury to the team\u2019s \u00a0best defensive player <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HeywCa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Heyward<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the line was still very good. \u00a0Heyward played in seven games and was the best player on that line, especially in run defense. \u00a0At the time of his injury, Heyward had three sacks for a defense that was starved for them. \u00a0He may have been lost for the year after seven games, but it didn\u2019t mean the defensive line was lacking in talent. \u00a0<\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TuitSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Tuitt<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was tenacious from the other end position, collecting four sacks and two forced fumbles. \u00a0Rookie nose tackle <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HargJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Javon Hargrave<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got two sacks while anchoring down the line at the nose, and backup end <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MathRi99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ricardo Mathews<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sack while seeing his playing time increase. \u00a0Even the depth players performed well with <\/span><b>L.T. Walton<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seeing an increase in playing time and late season addition <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MaxeJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Maxey<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being forced into duty. \u00a0Even backup nose tackle <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCuDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel McCullers<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got a sack. \u00a0This team had a fantastic starting lineup, but the depth behind the starting defensive line was shaky at best. \u00a0The team could stand to upgrade on the depth players on the line, but if the three starters remain, the defensive line could be strong again for the Steelers in 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 Outlook<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only free agent along the defensive line for this year is Ricardo Mathews, who they could re-sign on the cheap. \u00a0Stephon Tuitt and Daniel McCullers hit free agency after the 2017 season, so look at how both of them perform in a contract year. \u00a0The Steelers may actually elect to extend Tuitt sometime by the time the 2017 league year begins, so the only defensive lineman in a contract year would be Dan McCullers. \u00a0Keep an eye on McCullers, as he has been improving every year, so he may stay with the team as a long term backup since the team loves to retain its own players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off-season Outlook<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted above, the only defensive lineman to hit free agency is Ricardo Mathews. \u00a0The team could upgrade his spot via free agency or the draft, with the draft being a younger, more long term option. \u00a0They also could cut ties with McCullers and upgrade the backup nose tackle position with either someone with more experience, or more potential. \u00a0If there was any draft to upgrade the defense , it would be this one. \u00a0This year\u2019s draft has many good defensive linemen that Pittsburgh could potentially add to bolster up the depth along the line. \u00a0The Steelers are in a good spot with how talented the starting defensive line is, that all they need to look for is depth and not some young star. \u00a0Unless something unprecedented happens, such as <\/span><b>Myles Garrett<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> somehow dropping to the 30th pick, or <\/span><b>Jon Allen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0They may not even take them either, just because star defensive line isn\u2019t a glaring need.
