{"id":143411,"date":"2023-08-05T13:30:57","date_gmt":"2023-08-05T17:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/?p=143411"},"modified":"2023-08-05T12:10:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-05T16:10:39","slug":"eddie-jackson-bears-offense-roschon-johnson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/08\/05\/eddie-jackson-bears-offense-roschon-johnson\/","title":{"rendered":"Bears&#8217; Eddie Jackson Sends Message as Defense Leads Way in Training Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Through the early going of training camp, the Chicago Bears defense certainly has had the advantage on most days led by safety <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/07\/25\/bears-jackson-reacts-comments-mooney-sanborn\/\" target=\"_self\">Eddie Jackson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides of the ball have been <a href=\"https:\/\/bearswire.usatoday.com\/lists\/chicago-bears-nfl-draft-2023-offseason-moves\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">totally revamped<\/a> this offseason. But much of the attention has been on the offense. At the same time, the Bears\u2019 defense ranked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/stats\/team-stats\/defense\/rushing\/2022\/reg\/all\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">31st against the run<\/a> and 32nd in yards allowed per pass attempt last season.<\/p>\n<p>That latter number stands out as they have held their own against the passing game so far in camp.<\/p>\n<h2>Bears&#8217; Eddie Jackson to Offense: &#8216;We&#8217;re Not Letting Up&#8217;<\/h2>\n<h3>Eddie Jackson: &#8216;Iron Sharpens Iron&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s on us,\u201d Jackson said when asked what that does for the defense\u2019s confidence. \u201cIt\u2019s about us on defense. No matter what they do, we want to bring the best out of them every day, as well as ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A much-maligned group from 2022 added some teeth to the front seven. They added EDGE rusher <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/08\/04\/bears-ngakoue-answer-critics-eberflus-lewis\/\" target=\"_self\">Yannick Ngakoue<\/a> to an offseason haul that included linebackers <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/03\/13\/tremaine-edmunds-signs-contract-with-chicago-bears\/\" target=\"_self\">Tremaine Edmunds<\/a> from the Buffalo Bills and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/06\/13\/2023-bears\/\" target=\"_self\">T.J. Edwards<\/a> from the Philadelphia Eagles among several others like former Tennessee Titans EDGE rusher <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/08\/03\/bears-add-much-needed-pass-rusher-in-yannick-ngakoue\/\" target=\"_self\">DeMarcus Walker<\/a> and former Las Vegas Raiders tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/03\/24\/2023-nfl-free-agency-winners-and-losers\/\" target=\"_self\">Andrew Billings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A young secondary outside of the 29-year-old Jackson got a baptism by fire into the NFL last season and is playing faster this summer.<\/p>\n<p>That has led to a \u201cdifferent\u201d vibe <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/07\/28\/brisker-sounds-off-different-vibe-bears\/\" target=\"_self\">permeating the defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s our motto: Keep your foot on the gas. We\u2019re not letting up. No matter if they\u2019re balling against us, if they come out here and have a flat day. We\u2019re gonna go out there, we\u2019re gonna compete. Iron sharpens iron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/08\/04\/justin-fields-2023-fantasy-football-outlook\/\" target=\"_self\">Justin Fields<\/a> offered up a similar response when asked just how going up against this defense is paying off for the offense which has had to earn everything so far. Now healthy, he is right back setting the example for both sides of the ball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, we\u2019re all one team,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cBut right now, where the defense is headed, our mindset is different. We want to continue to come out here, get better, and compete every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Bears\u2019 Roschon Johnson \u2018Hated\u2019 Missing Time<\/h3>\n<p>Rookie running back <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/04\/10\/roschon-johnson-2023-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_self\">Roschon Johnson<\/a> was sidelined for several sessions but returned to the training camp fray on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was terrible,\u201d Johnson said on August 4 about having to miss so much time during his first NFL training camp. \u201cI hated every second just not being involved, not getting my feet wet. I hated it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bears chose Johnson in the fourth round with the No 114 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. Almost immediately, word about his talent and character became the story. He spent five years in college at Texas but four seasons came behind now-Atlanta Falcons rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/06\/26\/bijan-robinson-fantasy-football-rb1\/\" target=\"_self\">Bijan Robinson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His athleticism and skill set is undeniable.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Roschon Johnson&#39;s first year playing the RB position was 2019, as a freshman at Texas.<\/p>\n<p>His avoided tackle rate by season:<br \/>2019 &#8211; 21%<br \/>2020 &#8211; 34%<br \/>2021 &#8211; 42%<br \/>2022 &#8211; 49%<\/p>\n<p>Across 2021-22 seasons (3rd\/4th years as an RB), Johnson was the nation&#39;s second-most difficult RB to tackle. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pBhdPNRWuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/pBhdPNRWuk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jacob Gibbs (@jagibbs_23) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jagibbs_23\/status\/1686776758522286080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 2, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At 6-foot and 222 pounds, he falls somewhere in between incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/09\/30\/week-4-draftkings-plays-jamaal-williams-khalil-herbert\/\" target=\"_self\">Khalil Herbert<\/a> and 2023 free agency signing <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/03\/16\/donta-foreman-signs-contract\/\" target=\"_self\">D\u2019Onta Foreman<\/a> \u2013 who have operated as the primary backs so far in camp \u2013 in terms of size.<\/p>\n<p>And, given that Herbert previously served as a complementary back and Foreman on a one-year contract, there was a thought that Johnson could sneak his way atop the depth chart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas running back Roschon Johnson may have been overlooked a bit during the leadup to the 2023 NFL draft. He was blocked by Bijan Robinson\u2026so he never got to fully show what he may be capable of,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10074535-hot-takes-predictions-for-bears-rookies-after-2023-nfl-draft\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Rill of Bleacher Report<\/a> on May 1. \u201cAnd because he\u2019s a bruising back, his ceiling could be as high as leading the team in rushing scores this season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That remains to be seen but, of course, can only happen with Johnson healthy.<\/p>\n<h3>Bears Absences Piling Up<\/h3>\n<p>The Bears have dealt with their fair share of absences as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/03\/13\/nate-davis-signs-contract-with-chicago-bears\/\" target=\"_self\">Nate Davis<\/a> \u2013 who signed as a free agent from the Titans this offseason to be the starting right guard \u2013 remains sidelined along with several other players who project either as starters or key contributors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bears guard Teven Jenkins: back in action.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Sanborn, Nate Davis, DeMarcus Walker, Jaquan Brisker: present but not participating.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kevin Fishbain (@kfishbain) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kfishbain\/status\/1687846659252748288?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 5, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>They have not even started game-planning for their first preseason game \u2013 against the Titans, no less \u2013 yet.
