Speculation about his value was rife, with many rumors suggesting that some teams even viewed him as a better prospect than Will Anderson Jr. As always with draft rumors, take them with a pinch of salt. However, as they say, there is no smoke without fire. Wilson’s measurables and college performances are to be marveled. Subsequently, his stock has shot up vastly. Expect him to be one of the first names off the board in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Wilson started his collegiate career in 2019 (redshirt in 2018), playing in five games for Texas A&M. Following that year, he transferred to Texas Tech, where he slowly developed into the top draft prospect that he currently is. In 2022, Wilson was awarded a PFF grade of 75.1 through 10 games. He managed 61 tackles with fourteen for loss, seven sacks and a forced fumble. He was thus named a First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Big 12.

The current buzz suggests that Wilson is the second-best defensive player in the draft. This is because Jalen Carter’s misdemeanor charge has severely lowered his value, leaving Wilson and Anderson Jr. as the top two non-quarterback prospects. According to most big boards, Wilson is the draft’s second best edge rusher and a top-ten prospect (at worst). As such, expect him to go in the top ten of the upcoming draft.

Strengths

Improvement every year at the college level, finishing collegiate career on a high;

Decent amount of football experience at college level with good level of production;

Incredible length and size, elite wingspan (35 5/8”) which means that Wilson has exceptional impact radius;

Has some positional versatility and would be open to playing interior as well as conventional edge;

Size and athleticism means that Wilson has decent scheme versatility;

Untapped potential means Wilson’s ceiling is among the highest in the class;

Excellent toughness in run defense, shows good ability to shed blocks;

Has some established pass-rush moves (specifically a good swim move);

Beats recovery blocks easily;

Good ability to collapse the pocket with strong bull rush that pushes offensive lineman backwards;

Can chase down the backside of run plays when left unblocked

Weaknesses

Weaker college opponents and unspectacular production;

Lack of sustained dominance and outstanding production at college level means Wilson could bust;

Questionable speed, may not have enough bend and explosiveness to win consistently as a speed rusher;

Needs better work with hands;

Disagreement about where Wilson is best suited at NFL level (as traditional edge or as a defensive end?);

Lacks reactionary athleticism

NFL Comparison: J.J. While questions remain about where he is best suited, any team drafting Wilson would be getting an impact player either way. As a prospect, Wilson is not generational. However, he has rare (elite) size and good tools. For that reason, the main appeal of Wilson is his ceiling. Wilson’s potential is still largely untapped and, when unlocked, he has the capacity to be the best player from this class.

As a rookie, Wilson is a plug-and-play selection. As such, he is a worthy selection for any team that needs pass rush and defensive line help. In his first year, he would benefit from being largely used as an early-down lineman/edge rusher but his role would likely expand through his first season. Accordingly, the main things to work on with Wilson involve his pass rush ability. As such, if these skills can be honed, Wilson would be a threat to be reckoned with as an every-down contributor.

With Wilson, the hope is that the team selecting him is able to develop him. Wilson’s floor would be as an effective run stopper. But, when a player is picked in the top ten, the expectation is that they will be able to develop into much more than that. Wilson has the necessary raw tools for him to develop into one of the league’s top edge rushers as well as being an effective run defender.

Main Photo: Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Tyree Wilson 2023 NFL Draft Profile: The current buzz suggests that Wilson is the second-best defensive player in the draft.

[1647,33760
2030,9735
post-139267","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-draft","category-profiles","tag-nfl-draft-profiles","tag-tyree-wilson
["GET
