But their current situation \u2013 they are 2-4 following a loss to the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football \u2013 has some urging them to begin the selloff. They have the second-toughest remaining schedule, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tankathon.com\/nfl\/remaining_schedule_strength\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tankathon.com<\/a>, and have looked listless on offense more often than not.<\/p>\n<p>Their defense has gone from promising to concerning. Teams have alternated between picking on the young corners and running it right down the Bears\u2019 throats.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago ranks 28th against the run and has the worst pass rush, per <a href=\"https:\/\/premium.pff.com\/nfl\/teams\/2022\/REGPO\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pro Football Focus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of this could mean that things get much worse for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/10\/14\/bears-offense-dante-pettis-matt-eberflus-justin-fields\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Justin Fields<\/a> and Co. before it gets better. And that could lead general manager Ryan Poles to make some tough decisions as his focus shifts toward 2023 and away from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/08\/03\/chicago-bears-david-montgomery-sends-strong-message-versatile-rbs\/\" target=\"_self\">David Montgomery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Proposed Trade Sends Bears&#8217; David Montgomery to AFC Title Hopeful<\/h2>\n<h3>Montgomery for a 5th Rd Pick?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIn a year in which the Bears are cleaning up their cap and beginning their latest rebuild,\u201d asserts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/insider\/insider\/story\/_\/id\/34782045\/nfl-trade-deadline-proposals-2022-15-potential-offers-saquon-barkley-mitch-trubisky-david-montgomery\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESPN<\/a>\u2019s Bill Barnwell, \u201cMontgomery probably belongs elsewhere. He is a free agent after this season, and the people who drafted him no longer work for the organization. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/08\/08\/five-2022-nfl-sleepers-in-fantasy-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Khalil Herbert<\/a> also has excelled in Montgomery&#8217;s absence and deserves a larger role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, Barnwell proposes the Bears send the former Iowa State Cyclone to the East Coast and the Baltimore Ravens&#8217; rushing attack led by quarterback Lamar Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>Bears Get:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2023 5th-Round Pick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ravens Get:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>David Montgomery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Montgomery was drafted with the 73rd overall pick in 2019 by former Bears general manager Ryan Pace.<\/p>\n<p>He has 3054 career rushing yards in 49 career games with 40 starts making him the eighth back in <a href=\"https:\/\/stathead.com\/sharing\/KISE2\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bears\u2019 franchise history<\/a> to surpass the 3000-yard mark on the ground in his first four seasons and he still has 11 games to go this season.<\/p>\n<p>However, to Barnwell\u2019s point, Herbert has outrushed Montgomery to this point of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Herbert \u2013 a sixth-round pick by Pace last year \u2013 has 403 rushing yards to Montgomery\u2019s 246 on just one more carry.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also got three touchdowns to Montgomery\u2019s one.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Should the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bears?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Bears<\/a> extend running back David Montgomery after this season?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mullyhaugh?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@mullyhaugh<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidHaugh?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DavidHaugh<\/a> debated that.<\/p>\n<p>Listen: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vQsKgWun4L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/vQsKgWun4L<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HjAZKlCqdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/HjAZKlCqdr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; 670 The Score (@670TheScore) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/670TheScore\/status\/1579480316502192129?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 10, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the Bears likely to shop in free agency next offseason,\u201d Barnwell continues, \u201cthey probably will not be in position to gain a compensatory pick for Montgomery when he leaves. The same isn&#8217;t true for the Ravens, who typically mine the league&#8217;s compensatory formula for all it&#8217;s worth. It&#8217;s not clear whether the Ravens trust <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/07\/17\/jk-dobbins-fantasy-football-outlook-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">J.K. Dobbins<\/a> right now, given that his snap percentage dropped between Week 4 and Week 5. And <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/08\/30\/kenyan-drake-signs-contract-with-baltimore-ravens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Kenyan Drake<\/a> has been dismal as the team&#8217;s veteran back, while <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/10\/06\/baltimore-ravens-news-roundup-week-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Justice Hill<\/a> hasn&#8217;t been able to stay healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dobbins missed Sunday\u2019s tilt versus the New York Giants after his knee \u201ctightened up\u201d, per his head coach, John Harbaugh.<\/p>\n<p>Drake filled in admirably but the Ravens\u2019 backfield has been inconsistent this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ravens renting Montgomery for the rest of the season would probably net them a sixth- or seventh-round compensatory pick in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Bears, David Montgomery in Tough Spot<\/h3>\n<p>While it is true that Herbert has been the more efficient runner, much of that has come as a change-up to Montgomery. The Bears might also feel they are better off with him if a more generous return fails to present itself.
