On paper, the Seahawks look to be rebuilding after more than a decade of playoffs appearance and decline. The Seahawks believe they can win now and potentially compete for a wild card spot at the end of the regular season. The Seahawks have a solid 2022 NFL Draft class they can rely on to help them reload and some that can win now. Many positions have been addressed during the off-season, but the glaring position needs are ones that will stall the team. Several storylines will surface on the team, including the Seahawks, leading into training camp and, perhaps, after it starts.

READ MORE: Seahawks Training Camp Position Battles

Seattle Seahawks Storylines Heading into Training Camp

When does D.K. Metcalf get paid?

This off-season has been time for some of the NFL’s best or less wide receivers to get contract extensions. Among the biggest omissions is Seahawks star receiver D.K. Metcalf. Since entering the league in 2019, Metcalf has been one of Seattle’s most polarizing and highly efficient playmakers. He has been one of their more reliable players for the Seahawks on and off the field. He has stated he will be a leader for Seattle with Russell Wilson gone. Metcalf is deserving of a long-term, wealthy contract in the NFL. The problem is the salary cap they do not have a hold of until the roster is cut to 52 players. According to Spotrac, Metcalf is valued at a $97.1 million contract of four years. There is potential to find space for the money, especially without a high-value quarterback on the roster.

Are the Seahawks trading for a quarterback after all?

The Seahawks decided to cool their thoughts about Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, leaving the Carolina Panthers as the only team interested in the quarterback. Even Mayfield on another, the Seahawks might still be interested in another veteran quarterback through trade. On Tuesday, the Seahawks evaluated the tape of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is on the trade block. While Seattle has not stated they are looking to trade for Garoppolo, talks have escalated on the potential of the quarterback moving to another in the division. The two biggest factors of Garoppolo not being traded are his shoulder, which required repair surgery, and the $26.95 million he is set to make this 2022 NFL Season. If San Francisco wants to trade Garoppolo to Seattle, they may need to pay part of the contract. Seattle would have a good quarterback ready for the 2022 season.

Will the Seahawks cut Chris Carson?

The biggest concern with the team and fan base is if running back Chris Carson will ever play football again. Carson only played in four games last season due to a neck injury that required surgery. Reports are that he is still getting further evaluations to see if he could potentially play again. Head coach Pete Carroll and his team would love for him to come back and be a key member of the offense. They do not want him to get hurt again and run the risk of any further damage. This complicated matter may have to be done with caution. Carson is set to earn a base salary of $4.5 million and a total cap hit of $6.1 million.

Do the Seahawks have the worst roster in the league?

The Seahawks knew it was time to reload when they traded Russell Wilson and released Bobby Wagner. Not only were there two of the best players on their roster, but they were also key leaders. Several major media outlets claim the Seahawks have one of the worst rosters in the NFL. On June 29th, ESPN ranked Seattle with the 29th best roster above the Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, and Houston Texans. Pro Football Focus gave the Seahawks roster the same ranking with the 29th-best roster above Chicago, Atlanta, and Houston. Finally, CBS Sports ranked the Seahawks’ roster 26th in the league due to Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jamal Adams. The biggest downfall of their roster was their lack of proven pass rushers and quarterbacks.

Main Photo: Embed from Getty Images

The Seattle Seahawks are two weeks from the start of training camp, and there are more questions than answers going into the 2022 NFL Season.
