And yet, perceptions of them are so negative that their every move has been scrutinized to a point where it has become clear they are not free of the 30-plus years of futility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the most die-hard optimist has to admit that fielding competitive offenses, let alone teams, has often been a struggle for the NFL\u2019s oldest franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, the more things have changed for the Bears, the more they have remained the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Chicago Bears Fighting Negative Perceptions After Decades of Futility<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not Giving Fields Enough<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has perhaps been the most echoed sentiment and it is certainly the most damning. Most agree the most important thing about this season for the Bears is identifying whether or not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FielJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Fields<\/a> is the guy at quarterback. Many, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danorlovsky7\/status\/1522216864306266114?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1522216864306266114%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fatozsports.com%2Fchicago%2Fespns-dan-orlovsky-contradicts-himself-regarding-justin-fields%2F\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN\u2019s <\/span>Dan Orlovsky<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, think that is impossible with what general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/executives\/PoleRy0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Poles<\/a> has given him to work with.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIf Justin Fields plays really well this year he will be in the MVP conversation.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danorlovsky7?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@danorlovsky7<\/a> has high hopes for Fields, but isn\u2019t certain he has the tools to reach them. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/KJM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#KJM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/o7z2VrTqiD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/o7z2VrTqiD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio (@UnSportsESPN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UnSportsESPN\/status\/1523657371356381185?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 9, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Except, as was pointed out in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atozsports.com\/chicago\/espns-dan-orlovsky-contradicts-himself-regarding-justin-fields\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this article from A to Z Sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Orlovsky contradicted an earlier take he had on Fields. But he also omitted third-year wideout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MoonDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darnell Mooney<\/a> who recorded over 80 catches and 1000 receiving yards in an ineffective offensive system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poles has <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/05\/01\/chicago-bears-gm-ryan-poles-sends-strong-message-about-plans-for-roster\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">reiterated his faith<\/a> in Fields and vows to provide the quarterback with the weapons he needs. But he only took one receiver in the NFL Draft two weeks ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That selection, Velus Jones of Tennessee, was pre-ordained by Fields, per Poles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bears have limited resources with just $15 million in cap space remaining. They also began the draft with six picks, none in the first round. It is hard to imagine getting more for Fields now without giving up even more draft capital, further hamstringing the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Had he done that, the discourse would likely be how he is repeating the same mistakes of his predecessor, Ryan Pace, who often made a flurry of moves in the offseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[pickup_prop id=&#8221;20681&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deals Falling Apart<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poles\u2019 first major signing does not even count since the deal was nullified thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/sports\/larry-ogunjobi-fails-physical-will-not-sign-with-bears\/2786654\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Ogunjobi\u2019s failed physical<\/a>. The Bears reneged on the three-year, $40 million deal they offered him and pivoted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneJu03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Jones<\/a> of the Los Angeles Chargers to fill their critical void at three-technique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ogunjobi\u2019s former teammate with the Cincinnati Bengals, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/sports\/bengals\/cincinnati-bengals-nfl-pro-football-dj-reader-larry-ogunjobi-jessie-bates-free-agency-contract-negotiations-saw-business-side-of-football-friend\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D.J. Reader, spoke<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/sports\/bengals\/cincinnati-bengals-nfl-pro-football-dj-reader-larry-ogunjobi-jessie-bates-free-agency-contract-negotiations-saw-business-side-of-football-friend\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> on his good friend\u2019s plight<\/a> after Ogunjobi was back in the news for visiting with the New York Jets over two days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When I saw it, it really pissed me off but I can\u2019t comment on it\u2026(The) business is cutthroat and not everybody goes about handling business the same way\u2026Unfortunately, that\u2019s the way they handled it. That\u2019s life-changing money and for that to be snatched away, it\u2019s rough.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reader\u2019s position is understandable. And he is correct that the business of sports is cutthroat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Ogunjobi is still available to visit the Jets. That could show that he was not close enough to warrant the kind of deal the Bears initially offered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, the Bears have never ruled out signing the five-year veteran defensive lineman to a lesser deal. That plays into Reader\u2019s point about \u201clife-changing money\u201d. But Ogubjobi also made headlines after posting pictures of himself <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ontapsportsnet.com\/2022\/04\/25\/will-the-chicago-bears-sign-larry-ogunjobi-if-health-improves-instagram-photos-training-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working out with Bears-branded equipment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in late April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chicago also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalobills.com\/news\/ryan-bates-signed-a-four-year-contract-with-the-bills\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">missed out on offensive lineman Ryan Bates<\/a>, who re-signed with the Buffalo Bills, after signing him to an offer sheet, further hurting their image.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overreactions to Minor Details<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one will certainly get some reactions. The Bears may not know for certain whether or not Fields is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guy. But it is fairly obvious at this point that Peterman is not. Fortunately, that is not why Peterman was brought in. His purpose is as the third-string quarterback and training camp arm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Siemian will be Fields\u2019 backup this season. He too is limited. But has won games in the NFL. Peterman has one victory in four NFL seasons which came back in his rookie year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bringing in Peterman makes signing Siemian during free agency look that much better, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of signings, former Bears wideout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobiAl02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allen Robinson<\/a> took to social media to weigh in on Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine\u2019s free agency. LaVine was once thought a lock to return to Chicago next season but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/mvp-reaction-stopping-flopping\/id293376147?i=1000560247537\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that has changed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in recent days.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Zach Lavine to Dallas or Portland would be a super nice fit<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Allen Robinson II (@AllenRobinson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AllenRobinson\/status\/1524108307077554176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 10, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robinson also said LaVine would be the top free agent on the market and would have his choice of destinations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not entirely Bears-related. But a former Chicago star suggesting a current one would be a \u201cnice fit\u201d elsewhere drew the expected response from Bears fans. It also does nothing for the perception that this is not the place for stars, a stigma the Bears (and Bulls) have dealt with for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poles, Bears Focus on Grand Scheme<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might be naive to think that the Bears are crawling this season to run next year. That is when they will be one of the most cap-rich teams in the league. They will also have their first-round pick. It should be fairly high since they do not figure to win many games. They can take a stud wideout with that pick or trade it for one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both A.J. Brown and Marquise &#8220;Hollywood Brown&#8221; changed teams during this year\u2019s draft while 13 receivers were taken before the Bears selected Jones 71st overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poles stepped from the frying pan and into the fire taking over the Bears. But, so far, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2022\/03\/29\/the-chicago-bears-have-said-the-right-things-about-their-rebuild-but-need-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">his plan has not changed<\/a>, even if there have been several detours along the way.
