Coan was New York State Gatorade Player of the Year following the 2016 high school football season. At Sayville High School in Long Island’s Suffolk County, he set school career records for passing yards (9,787 yards) and touchdown passes (128).

In his freshman season, Coan saw limited action as a mop-up quarterback. However, he would secure significant playing time in his sophomore season. Starter Alex Hornibrook went down with an injury and the young quarterback took his place in the starting lineup. Coan started six games and threw for 551 yards with five touchdown passes and three interceptions. But the more eye-opening stat was his pass completion percentage (60.2), which is outstanding for a first-time starter.

In his junior season, Coan had his breakout campaign. The Badger QB threw for 2,727 yards with 18 touchdown passes and five interceptions. His pass completion percentage improved to just under 70 percent for the 14-game campaign.

Unfortunately, Coan took a step back in his senior season. He suffered a broken foot in preseason camp that forced him to miss the entire season. Wisconsin promising recruit Graham Mertz took firm control of the quarterback position in his absence. After sitting out his redshirt season, Coan elected to transfer to Notre Dame for his final year of eligibility. He was outstanding in his lone season with the Fighting Irish. Coan threw for 3,150 yards with 25 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. His completion percentage was 65.5 in 13 starts.

Strengths

Classic NFL pocket quarterback

Team leader

Outstanding collegiate career completion percentage

Calm, cool and collected under pressure

Excellent ball security

Executes the coach’s gameplan

A work in progress

Weaknesses

Questionable arm strength

Needs better deep throw touch

Accuracy issues on sideline routes

Fails to read underneath coverage

Over-confident in tight coverage throws

Lacks scrambling ability

Cannot create plays outside the pocket

NFL Comparison: Brian Hoyer

Teams With Need at Position: Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos

Bottom Line on Jack Coan

Coan has an excellent shot of becoming the NFL’s next great backup quarterback who could develop into a starter under the right offensive coach. His skill set fits perfectly in a pro-style pocket passing attack. Coan’s height is ideal for tossing vertical passes downfield. Unfortunately, not too many teams are looking for a quarterback of this nature.

His ability to complete short and intermediate passes with regularity will gain traction among NFL scouts. Coan has the smarts not to force a throw in tight coverage. But the majority of his interceptions are a result of his over-confidence. The latter may hurt his draft stock.

He lacks the mobility to get away from oncoming rushers. However, Coan rarely shows any urgency, especially when the pocket collapses around him. His toughness in heavy duress could open some team executive’s eyes. Coan’s leadership skills do inspire his teammates to play better. Still, NFL teams are looking for quarterbacks who can move the pocket to extend a pass play. Coan’s pocket presence will help him become a late-round selection option.

Projection: 6th round

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Jack Coan is a traditional pocket passer, but are there teams who are willing to select and develop him in the NFL Draft?

[1647
8755,9063
post-132307","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-draft","tag-2022-nfl-draft","tag-jack-coan
["GET
