{"id":13151,"date":"2017-02-19T19:24:27","date_gmt":"2017-02-20T00:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/?p=13151"},"modified":"2017-02-19T19:24:27","modified_gmt":"2017-02-20T00:24:27","slug":"pittsburgh-steelers-2016-positional-overview-tight-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2017\/02\/19\/pittsburgh-steelers-2016-positional-overview-tight-end\/","title":{"rendered":"Pittsburgh Steelers 2016 Positional Overview: Tight End"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Pittsburgh Steelers, 2016 season over we will look towards the off-season and the 2017 season. \u00a0The tight end position wasn\u2019t as reliable as it was in years past after the retirement of long-time fan favorite <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MillHe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heath Miller<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0In this edition of the Pittsburgh Steeler Positional Overviews, we will look at the tight end position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh Steelers 2016 Positional Overview: Tight End<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>2016 Review<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Steelers played this season with four tight ends on the roster. \u00a0<\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GreeLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ladarius Green<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GrimXa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavier Grimble<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JameJe00,JameJe21&amp;search=Jesse+James&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse James<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnDa05,JohnDa08&amp;search=David+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Johnson<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all saw playing time. \u00a0Jesse James started 13 games and lead the team\u2019s tight ends with 338 yards and three touchdowns. Green only started two games, playing in six, but he had about the same production as James did playing in less games. \u00a0Xavier Grimble gained 118 yards and scored twice playing nine games, and David Johnson gained 80 yards being a blocking tight end. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0As a whole, the Steelers tight end group amassed only 840 yards total and scored six times. \u00a0Those low group numbers could be attributed to a couple of factors. \u00a0For starters, long-time security blanket <strong>Heath Miller<\/strong> retired so <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoetBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Roethlisberger<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t have him to throw to to get him out of a jam, he simply didn\u2019t have enough chemistry with the group to be successful. \u00a0Another factor that goes into the lack of production is injuries. \u00a0Ladarius Green only played in six games all year and missed 10 because of injury. \u00a0In the games that he did play he showed that he could be an explosive target for Big Ben to throw to. \u00a0Roethlisberger\u2019s injury can also be somewhat contributed to the lack of production. \u00a0Before he got injured he was playing at an MVP level, but after that he was a shell of himself. \u00a0Green didn\u2019t play with a fully healthy Ben Roethlisberger last year, if they had been healthy at the same time Green could have been one of the better tight ends in football. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2017 Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>The only free agent tight end the Steelers have is David Johnson and he should re-sign for a cheap price. \u00a0This means the Steelers should return all of their tight ends from 2016. \u00a0If Ladarius<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green can stay healthy he could have a successful season. \u00a0Jesse James\u2019 development took some nice steps forward last season and if it continues he could be a nice security blanket or even vertical weapon in the passing game. \u00a0David Johnson figures to continue his role as a primary blocking tight end and Xavier Grimble should only see spot duty barring major injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off-Season Outlook<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted above, David Johnson is the only free agent tight end the Steelers have. \u00a0They figure to re-sign him on the cheap. \u00a0If they have no faith that Ladarius Green can stay healthy, they could release him and either go after an affordable tight end in free agency such as <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DoylJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Doyle<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurtTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trey Burton<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They could also go by the way of the draft. \u00a0<strong>O.J. Howard<\/strong> will most likely be gone by pick 30, but <strong>David Njoku<\/strong> out of Miami may still be there for them.
