According to reports, Mayo signed a one-year deal to remain in Washington. The deal is worth $1,187,500. Mayo’s 2022 base salary will be $1,035,000 with a $152,500 signing bonus. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023.

David Mayo Stays with the Washington Football Team

Mayo is a seven-year pro from Texas State. He was a fifth-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2015. He spent four seasons with the Panthers and two seasons with the New York Giants before signing with Washington in 2021.

Mayo, who is primarily a special teams player, found himself playing more defensive snaps near the end of the season. This season, Mayo played in 70 percent of special teams snaps compared to 16 percent of defensive snaps. However, he played the majority of his snaps on defense in two of Washington’s final three games.

[pickup_prop id=”18197″]

Finishing Strong

He played 100 percent of the defensive snaps in Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys. In Week 17, against the Philadelphia Eagles, Mayo played 66 percent of defensive snaps. In his final three games, he recorded 15 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, and one quarterback hit.

With Mayo assuming the interior linebacker position, Cole Holcomb was able to move outside. Holcomb, who filled the ‘mike’ linebacker role for most of 2021, played at a higher level at his natural position. Mayo’s insertion into the lineup also led to questions about the team’s faith in first-round rookie linebacker Jamin Davis.

Davis had a strong showing in the season finale, recording eight combined tackles and one tackle for loss. However, Washington still needs to address the middle linebacker position either through the draft or free agency. Resigning Mayo will continue to provide a presence on special teams and solid backup at middle linebacker.

Main Photo: Embed from Getty Images

David Mayo Stays with the Washington Football Team: In early off-season news, the inside linebacker reportedly signed a one-year deal.

[36,6431,8896,22
4164,8523,7281,7385
post-127700","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-news","category-nfl-teams","category-washington-commanders","category-washington-football-team","tag-david-mayo","tag-football-team-featured","tag-washington-football-team-news","tag-washington-football-team-roster
["GET
