The New Orleans Saints throttled the Packers 38-3. Also, the returning Super Bowl champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers were swept by the Saints. As a matter of fact, the Saints won four of five while Tom Brady was the quarterback.

[pickup_prop id=”18202″]

The Saints in the NFL playoffs Scare the NFL

Of course, Tampa fans will quickly point out the Bucs beat the Saints in the only game that mattered. Part truth and part farce. The Saints turned the ball over four times against zero for the Buccaneers. Regardless, this Saints team is scary. Of course, the black and gold have not made the playoffs just yet. They need a win and help. Not impossible but surely not a given. But make no mistake, this team is not one that any NFC team wants to play in January.

One thing is for sure. The Saints are battle-tested. From injuries to hurricanes — to COVID-19 and rotating kickers. No way this team should be at 8-8 fighting for a playoff spot. Yet their defense keeps finding a way to keep fans believing. And the playoffs are still in play for the Saints.

NFC is put on Notice

The Saints also ran blow for blow with the Dallas Cowboys. The score shows a 27-17 final score but the game was very tight down the stretch. Not to mention, the Saints overcame Taysom Hill’s four interceptions. The game was tight towards the end of the third quarter when running back Tony Pollard galloped 58 yards to pay dirt.

Breaking down the stats in the game — the Saints outgained the Cowboys 405-377 in total offense. The Saints ran the ball efficiently too. Without Alvin Kamara, the Saints ran for 153 yards on 26 carries. That’s just under six yards a carry.

Ultimately, the point is the Saints possess the talent to compete with any team in the NFL. The defense getting healthy at the right time should make any team scares to face them.

Defense Controls the Tempo

Furthermore, the style of football the Saints play is conducive to success in cold weather. Without Drew Brees, the Saints play more of a ball-control offense as the defense sets the tone. Running the ball with a swarming defense is a recipe for winning.

Throwing the ball in windy cold conditions put more risk on making turnovers. If the Saints can win the turnover battle and hold the opponent near 20 points — a win is likely.

The one thing on defense the Saints can’t do is give up big chunks at a time. This has been the detriment late in games in the past. If Cam Jordan and the defensive line present pressure consistently — no quarterback will have the time to even look downfield. Keeping everything in front is going to be key. And tackling one on one needs to be sharp.

Special Teams and Two Minute Offense Efficiency for Saints Dominance in Playoffs

On offense, the receivers have to step up. No more dripped passes. Also, these games are going to be close — so wasting time-outs are a waste literally. One possession could be the difference between winning and losing.

Lastly, special teams must go in our favor. The offense isn’t made to being backed up on our side of the field. Starting beyond the 30-yard line at least is critical to stay balanced. Also, the last two minutes of the first half means an advantage if done appropriately. Saints do better when they kickoff to start the game. Having the ball second half flips the scoreboard. Especially, if the Saints can score in those last two minutes.

Saints will need some luck to get into the playoffs with help from the Los Angeles Rams. Of course, beating the Atlanta Falcons is the number one goal. Win and this team are dangerous.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Beware of the New Orleans Saints if they make the NFL Playoffs.
