In his only true college season as a starter in 2019, Lance led the Bisons to a 16-0 record and an FCS Championship Game victory over the James Madison Dukes, picking up the game\u2019s MVP award in the process.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Trey Lance is officially a San Francisco 49er\u2b50\ufe0f<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Oq02Gg6sk7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/Oq02Gg6sk7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PFF College (@PFF_College) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PFF_College\/status\/1420398095746142212?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the 2019 season, Lance used his dual-threat abilities to get touchdowns from every area of the field &#8211; 28 passing TDs and nearly 2,800 yards along with 14 TDs and 1,100 yards on the ground alone made him a standout prospect. Couple that with the fact he threw just one interception in college and it\u2019s no surprise the 49ers were impressed.<\/p>\n<h3>Garoppolo vs Lance Debate Squashed<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s been a lot of talk in the off-season about whether it\u2019ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GaroJi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Garoppolo<\/a> or Lance starting for the Niners this season. With Lance signing his rookie deal, head coach Kyle Shanahan stated quite convincingly that whilst Lance is the future, it\u2019s Garoppolo for now.<\/p>\n<p>Via Ben Ross of the Associated Press, Shanahan <a href=\"https:\/\/pro32.ap.org\/article\/shanahan-says-garoppolo-starting-qb-49ers-open-camp\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cleared things up for the fans<\/a> and press alike.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere\u2019s no open competition right now in terms of getting equal reps with the same group. Jimmy is coming in as the (No.) 1 and Trey is coming in as the 2.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe\u2019s our best quarterback in the building right now, so he\u2019ll start out training camp that way and we\u2019ve got three other guys behind him.
