{"id":1184,"date":"2016-09-10T20:04:15","date_gmt":"2016-09-11T00:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/?p=1184"},"modified":"2016-09-10T20:04:15","modified_gmt":"2016-09-11T00:04:15","slug":"markus-wheaton-ruled-out-against-washington-redskins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2016\/09\/10\/markus-wheaton-ruled-out-against-washington-redskins\/","title":{"rendered":"Markus Wheaton&#8217;s Injury Has Him Ruled Out Against Washington Redskins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Pittsburgh Steelers<\/strong>\u00a0will be without one of their starting receivers for their season opener against the Washington Redskins on Monday night. <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WheaMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Markus Wheaton<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>&#8216;s injury has him ruled out,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelers.com\/news\/injuryreport\/article-1\/Week-1-Injury-Report-Redskins\/028a88ca-8362-43a2-876e-c878e751bfa4\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">along with three others<\/a>, for Monday night&#8217;s game.<\/p>\n<h2>Markus Wheaton&#8217;s Injury Has Him Ruled Out Against Washington Redskins<\/h2>\n<p>Team reporter <strong>Ed Bouchette<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EdBouchette\/status\/774650802724044800\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> the fourth-year receiver missed practice on Saturday due to a right shoulder injury. Before practice the 25-year-old wideout was listed as \u201cday-to-day.\u201d However, severe soreness in his shoulder is holding him out.<\/p>\n<p>Wheaton\u2019s preseason was derailed by injury. He missed the first two games and sat out the fourth because of undisclosed injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Without Wheaton in the lineup, who starts opposite of All-Pro <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?search=Antonio+Brown&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Brown<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, the Steelers offense will look very different from last season.<\/p>\n<p>In the off-season, Pittsburgh lost their starting tight end <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MillHe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heath Miller<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0when he called it quits after 11 seasons. His replacement, <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GreeLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ladarius Green<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, was supposed to fill the void of the reliable pass catcher. Green is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/steelers\/index.ssf\/2016\/08\/steelers_ladarius_green_pup.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">questionable for the season<\/a> with foot and head ailments.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoetBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Roethlisberger<\/a><\/strong> and company will be without big-play receiver <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BryaMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martavis Bryant<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, who is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/story\/0ap3000000643984\/article\/martavis-bryant-suspended-minimum-one-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">serving a one-year suspension<\/a> after violating the substance-abuse policy.<\/p>\n<p>With injury comes opportunity. Second-year receiver\u00a0<strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoatSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sammie Coates<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and veteran <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HeywDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darrius Heyward-Bey<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> will split snaps in game one, while undrafted <strong>Eli Rogers<\/strong>\u00a0will start in the slot. Second-year tight end <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?search=Jesse+James&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse James<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> will start in place of the injured <strong>Green<\/strong>. Here is what to expect from the new receiving corps:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Coates, Rogers, Heyward-Bey and James New Roles On Offense<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Sammie Coates<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoatSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sammie Coates<\/strong><\/a> is big, fast, and athletic, but he has been inconsistent. In his rookie campaign he rode the bench for most of the season. Coates appeared in only six games and caught one pass for 11 yards. This preseason the former <strong>Auburn<\/strong> Tiger&#8217;s ups and downs continued. He dropped passes, but made up for it with spectacular grabs like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelers.com\/videos\/videos\/HIGHLIGHT-Coates-24-yard-tip-toe-catch\/3e74028f-f503-4379-8041-152e0026092d\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a>. \u00a0Due to his miscues, he lost the No. 3 position to <strong>Eli Rogers<\/strong>. However, offensive coordinator <strong>Todd Haley<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2016\/08\/03\/todd-haley-sees-night-and-day-difference-in-sammie-coates\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raved about Coates\u2019 progression<\/a>. He is projected to make a big leap (and plays) in 2016.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Eli Rogers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>After being a second-year, undrafted player out of <strong>Louisville<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RogeEl00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eli Rogers<\/strong><\/a> was a question mark just to make the team this season. \u00a0Last off-season, the 5-foot-10, 187-pound receiver signed with Pittsburgh. Soon later, he endured a season ending foot injury which landed him on the injured reserve list for the year. After working effortlessly to return, his hard work turned heads this camp.<\/p>\n<p>Roethlisberger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelersdepot.com\/2016\/09\/big-role-store-steelers-eli-rogers-2016-ben-roethlisberger-thinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>\u00a0Rogers showed quickness and toughness, which helped the receiver earn both the starting slot receiver and punt returner positions. Rogers overtook the returner spot from teammate Brown, who has been mentoring the young pass catcher. \u00a0The All-Pro, Brown,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AntonioBrown84\/status\/736722321977790464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> the young wideout will have a standout year. NFL analyst <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SimmCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Simms<\/a><\/strong> <\/strong>went as far as <a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2658723-is-eli-rogers-next-in-long-line-of-stud-pittsburgh-steelers-pass-catchers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comparing Rogers to Brown<\/a>. If Rogers is half as good as his mentor was in 2015, he will still amass 68 catches and 917 yards.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Darrius Heyward-Bey<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HeywDa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Darrius Heyward-Bey<\/strong><\/a>, the seasoned veteran, has been a solid surprise for the Steelers after his lackluster years with the <strong>Oakland Raiders<\/strong> and <strong>Indianapolis Colts<\/strong>. As the fourth man in the receiving corps, he caught 21 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns in 2015. Last season the known speedster showed he still had wheels when he had a 66-yard grab. He\u2019ll make big plays at times, but Heyward-Bey is a situational player. He is intended to share time with Coates in Week one, but should be relegated to the fourth or fifth option when Wheaton returns.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Jesse James<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Projected to be the second man behind Green, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?search=Jesse+James&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jesse James<\/strong><\/a> has embraced the opportunity. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/blog\/afcnorth\/post\/_\/id\/89199\/steelers-fans-jesse-james-is-ready-to-ease-your-tight-end-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to ESPN<\/a>, James said he feels good and confident to be the Steelers starting tight end. Last year, behind Miller, he caught eight passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.
