That, of course, was when Roger Goddell announced the team was selecting the Heisman winner with the first overall pick. While he still has a long way to go, Burrow\u2019s rookie year proved his ability to be a great NFL quarterback. With a little less than one NFL season on his resume, Joe Burrow gave fans moments that show his enormous capabilities&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[pickup_prop id=&#8221;5371&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Joe Burrow Rookie Moments That Proved Path to Greatness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After one season of professional football, Joe Burrow gave fans moments that previewed the legend of a future great. While he didn\u2019t lead rookies in many statistical categories, Burrow\u2019s numbers will never tell the full story. On the field and behind the scenes, Burrow showed leadership and clutch traits that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2021\/02\/19\/cincinnati-bengals-off-season-plans-joe-burrow\/\" target=\"_self\">changed the course<\/a> of Cincinnati\u2019s franchise. Still, there\u2019s a long road ahead for Burrow. After all, the Bengals finished 4-11-1 and are picking fifth in the 2021 NFL Draft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, one of the defining moments of Joe Burrow\u2019s rookie campaign will always be remembered as the most unfortunate. His suffering of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/bengals-qb-joe-burrow-suffers-torn-acl-mcl-in-left-knee\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">torn ACL against<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/washington-football-team\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Football Team<\/a> made a dark bookend to a brilliant first ten games. Burrow accumulated 2,688 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, completed 65.3% of his passes, and threw just five interceptions in 2020. Now, with Burrow on the road to recovery and Cincinnati improving their offensive line, he\u2019s set up for more big things in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>April 23rd, 2020: \u201cTime to get to work.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just minutes after being selected with the first pick in the 2020 NFL, Burrow showed his hunger. He didn\u2019t need to say much, but his first tweet as a Bengal gave fans insight into the team\u2019s newest employee. In the midst of a nasty pre-draft process with national media members hammering the Bengals, Burrow proved to be ready. He could\u2019ve bought into the \u2018pull an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MannEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eli Manning<\/a>\u2019 narrative and <a href=\"https:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2020\/01\/21\/source-dolphins-would-love-to-land-joe-burrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demanded a trade<\/a> to the M<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/dolphins\/\" target=\"_self\">iami Dolphins<\/a>. With the Black Lives Matter movement and racial injustice leading the national conversation, the Bengals organization had been too quiet. That was until Aug. 29, 2020, when the team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadvocate.com\/baton_rouge\/sports\/article_f001a9b2-ea49-11ea-a49d-9713b971f1c3.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">led a march<\/a> to Cincinnati\u2019s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Two Bengals leaders were tabbed to address the community at the march. One, the team\u2019s gritty, veteran center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HopkTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trey Hopkins<\/a>. The other, their rookie quarterback, Joe Burrow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among 80 of his teammates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bengals\/allbengals-insiders-plus\/joe-burrow-stories-discrimation-eye-opening\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they chose<\/a> their young quarterback in Burrow, who had yet to play a regular-season snap. \u201cIt is each of our responsibility to effect change in our communities, not only for us but for those yet to come. We cannot turn a blind eye to the racism still experienced in this country. This is not an issue of politics but a fight for equality and life. If this nation is to ever reach the goals that it has promised its citizens, we must be catalysts for change,\u201d Burrow said at the podium. This not only showed Burrow\u2019s love within the locker room but his ability to lead in life\u2019s many facets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>September 17th, 2020: Burrow Puts the Team On His Back after Primetime Loss<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first of two wire-to-wire battles with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/browns\/\" target=\"_self\">Cleveland Browns<\/a>, Joe Burrow had his first national television moment. On Thursday Night Football, the Bengals fell 35-30 to their rivals on the road. Still, it was a brilliant night for Burrow, one where he set a rookie record for pass attempts in a game. He finished with 316 yards, three touchdowns, and completed 37-of-61 passes. In a game taken by the Browns, it was Burrow who shined in the aftermath. Having outplayed another recent first-overall pick in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MayfBa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baker Mayfield<\/a>, Burrow showed the league that he\u2019s the real deal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>November 1st, 2020: Joe Burrow Shines As Bengals Dismantle Contender<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entering this Week 8 matchup, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/titans\/\" target=\"_self\">Tennesee Titans<\/a> and Bengals were on opposite ends of the league\u2019s spectrum. The Titans were off to a 5-1 start with their only blemish coming against the then-undefeated <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/steelers\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a>. Meanwhile, the Bengals were 1-5-1, fresh off of another heartbreaking loss to the Browns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Against one of the league\u2019s presumptive Super Bowl contenders, Joe Burrow led a dominant, 31-20 home win. He threw for 249 yards, two touchdowns, and completed 26-of-37 passes, with the Titans never grasping a lead or tie after Cincinnati\u2019s first score. In another impressive feat, the team converted 10-of-15 third downs, keeping the Titans offense off the field. While Burrow wouldn\u2019t win another game in his rookie campaign, this was a big one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>March 31st, 2021: Burrow&#8217;s Anticipated Return to the Field<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March, rumblings around Cincinnati indicated that their franchise quarterback was getting ready to head back on the gridiron. On Mar. 31, 2021, the Bengals social accounts shared a video of Burrow walking onto the field. Over his trainer&#8217;s shoulder was carrying a bag of footballs, indicating the young quarterback&#8217;s return to throwing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Reminder: April Fools&#39; Day is tomorrow, it&#39;s not today. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rJVJZqzIiP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/rJVJZqzIiP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Cincinnati Bengals (@Bengals) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bengals\/status\/1377297926305759237?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 31, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some fans will choose to remember Nov. 22, 2020, as a key date, the day Burrow suffered his nasty knee injury. Instead, it feels important to focus on his recovery, a process that greatly encourages people inside of Paul Brown Stadium. In comments with the media, Director of Player Personnel, Duke Tobin, <a href=\"https:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2021\/03\/08\/duke-tobin-joe-burrows-rehab-going-well-were-going-to-build-everything-around-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suggested that Burrow<\/a> is attacking his rehab. Further, he indicated that the 24-year-old passer is getting ready for Week One.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People inside Burrow\u2019s camp are equally impressed with his recovery. \u201cThat not only where he\u2019s progressed physically, but that\u2019s great for his mental state of mind too, to be able to throw the football,\u201d Jimmy Burrow, Joe\u2019s father, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcpo.com\/news\/local-news\/hamilton-county\/cincinnati\/bengals-speak-out-on-racial-injustice-after-march-to-freedom-center\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told Jeremy Rauch<\/a> of Cincinnati\u2019s FOX19. \u201cAt some point in the next month or whatever, then he can start utilizing receivers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Last Word<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The road back to the field for Burrow certainly isn\u2019t easy. Regardless, all signs point to the young quarterback aiming for a speedy return. In reality, it would be great for the Bengals and the NFL as a whole to have the premier passer healthy.
