The outside linebacker from Kentucky was supposed to boost the Pittsburgh pass rush. Drafted to eventually fill the void to be left by veteran <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrJa23.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harrison<\/a><\/strong>, Dupree was eased into his rookie season. He made five starts, playing 50.8% of the Steelers&#8217; defensive snaps.<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh&#8217;s inability to get after the passer has been it&#8217;s biggest downfall from Steelers teams of the past. The aforementioned Harrison\u00a0led the team in sacks this season at age 38 with five. The last Steeler to amount more than 7.5 sacks in a season was Jason Worlds in 2013. The last Steeler to hit double digit sacks? <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WoodLa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LaMarr Woodley<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0Harrison both were in double digits in 2010.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bud Dupree Raises the Ceiling of the Pittsburgh Steelers Defense<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4>Dupree&#8217;s Sheer Athleticism<\/h4>\n<p>Coming out of Kentucky, Bud Dupree was known for his freakish athleticism. At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/combine\/profiles\/Bud-Dupree?id=2552289\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFL combine in 2015<\/a>, Dupree ran a 4.59 in the 40 yard dash (second among linebackers) despite weighing in at 269 pounds. He was the best linebacker in the broad jump (11 feet, 6 inches) and the second bast linebacker in the vertical jump (42 inches). His speed off the line\u00a0was on display with this hit on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=SmitAl03,SmitAl02&amp;search=Alex+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Smith<\/a><\/strong> last week, giving <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShazRy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Shazier<\/a><\/strong> an easy interception.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-video\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">First rounders paying off. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bud_Dupree\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Bud_Dupree<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RyanShazier\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@RyanShazier<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vajdWQbZqP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/vajdWQbZqP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tomlin Reactions (@TomlinReactions) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomlinReactions\/status\/820818491779518464\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 16, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fellow Steeler linebacker <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MoatAr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arthur Moats<\/a><\/strong> had this to say to media following the victory against Kansas City:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sky is the limit for that guy. He has the perfect size\/speed combo. You look at all the top linebackers, you look at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MillVo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Von Miller<\/a><\/strong>, you look at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MackKh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khalil Mack<\/a><\/strong>. He fits that same type of mold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While not the quickest to diagnose plays, Pittsburgh was hoping to get exactly this type of speed rushing ability from Dupree.<\/p>\n<p>Dupree began this\u00a0season on injured reserve with a groin injury, an issue that caused him to sit out all of the preseason. Prior to Dupree&#8217;s return, the Pittsburgh defense ranked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footballoutsiders.com\/dvoa-ratings\/2016\/week-10-dvoa-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20th in the league by DVOA<\/a>. They finished the regular season <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footballoutsiders.com\/dvoa-ratings\/2016\/week-16-dvoa-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ranked 9th<\/a>. With Dupree in the lineup, the Steelers defense has given up only 17 points a game. His pass rushing has helped the defense to hold opponents to and average of only 195 passing yards per game.\u00a0More importantly than statistics, the Steelers have not lost a game this season with Bud Dupree on the field.
