{"id":102049,"date":"2021-01-14T09:00:56","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T14:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/?p=102049"},"modified":"2021-05-30T19:28:07","modified_gmt":"2021-05-30T23:28:07","slug":"stephon-gilmore-trade-destinations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2021\/01\/14\/stephon-gilmore-trade-destinations\/","title":{"rendered":"Stephon Gilmore Trade Destinations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a disappointing 7-9 finish to their season, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/patriots\/\" target=\"_self\">New England Patriots<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/coaches\/BeliBi0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Belichick <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a lot of work to do ahead of the 2021 season. Perhaps first and foremost on New England\u2019s off-season checklist is deciding if they should trade All-Pro cornerback, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GilmSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Gilmore<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After earning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019, Gilmore took a small step backward in 2020. However, despite that small step and playing in just 11 games, Gilmore still earned Pro-Bowl honors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Gilmore will be entering the final year of his contract in 2021, he has been seeking a new contract along with a raise for the better part of a year now. The former defensive player of the year certainly has earned a pay raise as his average annual value currently ranks as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/position\/cornerback\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highest paid cornerback in the NFL. Fellow corners such as <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BouyA.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A.J. Bouye<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeteMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Peters<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WaynTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trae Waynes<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PetePa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Peterson<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SlayDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darius Slay<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all rank ahead of Gilmore despite being lesser players. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Patriots, as they did with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ButlMa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Butler<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/ReviDa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darrelle Revis<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, likely will not give Gilmore a second contract and Gilmore likely will not play under his current deal. This leaves both sides two options, either New England cuts Gilmore, something which makes no sense as he still brings value, or New England trades Gilmore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stephon Gilmore Trade Destinations\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New England would save roughly ten million cap dollars in a Gilmore trade. However, the tricky part of trading Gilmore is finding a team who would be willing to give an aging corner a new contract.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>San Francisco 49ers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/49ers\/\" target=\"_self\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> have a history of being willing to pay older cornerbacks. The most recent example came in 2018 when the team signed a 30-year-old <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SherRi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Sherman<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following a serious Achilles injury. Sherman will be a free agent this off-season and barring a \u201cmiracle\u201d will be looking to move on, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/30492443\/richard-sherman-pessimistic-return-san-francisco-49ers-2021\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early December. With Sherman likely out the door, the 49ers will need to bolster their secondary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deal centered around Gilmore for <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GaroJi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Garoppolo<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes sense for both the Patriots and 49ers. San Francisco would absorb just a 2.8 million dollar dead cap charge while freeing up just over 23 million in cap space with a Garoppolo trade. The only potential hiccup with this deal is the 49ers would need to have a quarterback replacement in order to feel comfortable with trading away their starter. However, with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CousKi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirk Cousins<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RyanMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Ryan<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StafMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Stafford<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all rumored to be available via trade this off-season, the 49ers may have aspirations of shaking their roster up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Las Vegas Raiders<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/raiders\/\" target=\"_self\"> Las Vegas Raiders<\/a> pass defense struggled in 2020, ranking as the seventh-worst<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> secondary in the league giving up an average of 263.2 yards per game. After finishing 8-8, the Raiders could be looking to make a move that pushes them over the hump and into the playoffs. Trading for Gilmore certainly would help that cause. New England packaging Gilmore and a late-round pick for <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RenfHu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hunter Renfrow<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and improved draft capital makes sense for both sides. The Raiders&#8217; offense is loaded with pass-catching playmakers such as <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WallDa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darren Waller<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RuggHe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Ruggs<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillTy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyrell Williams<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdwaBr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryan Edwards<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who would allow for Las Vegas to deal away Renfrow. With two years left on his rookie contract, Renfrow would bring an instant upgrade to New England\u2019s receiver room and would have a real chance at becoming the next great slot receiver for the Patriots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Patriots and Belichick are facing a critical 2021 off-season which will set the direction of their franchise for years to come. Another year of poor drafting and mismanagement of assets could send New England down a multi-year dark path of mediocrity.
