The Cincinnati Bengals are not in the playoffs this year but one of their players is making the news. And for all the wrong reasons. 33-year-old Adam Jones was arrested early this morning on multiple counts (including three misdemeanors and one felony). At his age and level of production, this incident could prove to be career ending for Jones. He is a cornerback and has been in the NFL since 2005.
Cincinnati Bengals Cornerback Adam Jones Arrested
It’s usually not a good thing for an older player in the NFL to make headlines off of the gridiron. But it doesn’t seem that Adam Jones was thinking too clearly during last night’s incident. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Adam Jones was arrested on a felony charge of harrassment with a bodily substance; as well as misdemeanors of assault, disorderly conduct, and obstructing the police. It is alleged that Jones was making a lot of noise in the hotel. That’s not surprising because it is also alleged that Jones poked a security guard in the eye. You can’t make this stuff up. Besides harming the security guard, Jones reportedly head butted and kicked police officers while resisting.
Adam Jones apparently will fight this case. He does deserve the right to a fair trial but either way, this doesn’t look good for his NFL career. Jones is 33 years old and just finished the first year of a three-year contract worth $22 million dollars. There are $6 million dollars of guarantees in Jones’ contract.
The are a few questions that this incident begs. One, is what will the Cincinnati Bengals do with Jones? Also, what will the NFL do with him? Right now, it’s too early to tell for either question. But the Bengals need to think about whether Jones’ level of play (at his age) is good enough to ignore his behavior. And the league office needs to consider a tough but fair suspension that is consistent with similar past incidents. One thing is for sure: It will be a long off-season for Adam Jones.
