Mike Wilson, Tennessee athletics beat writer for the Knoxville News Sentinel, told my sportswriting class that.<\/p>\n<p>Though in the case of 2021, I think we got the best story.<\/p>\n<p>As a peek behind the curtain, I wrote four championship columns, prior to Sunday&#8217;s race at Phoenix Raceway. Since\u00a0<strong>Kyle Larson<\/strong> won, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2021\/11\/07\/the-white-zone-kyle-larson-goes-from-pariah-to-champion\/\" target=\"_self\">I hit PUBLISH on that piece<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d hate for the other three to waste away, however. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2020\/11\/09\/unpublished-championship-stories\/\" target=\"_self\">So like I did last season<\/a>, I put them all into this one piece. Photo: Sean Gardner\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Martin Truex Jr.<\/strong>\u2019s NASCAR career is a 30 for 30 special waiting to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a hot prospect who won back-to-back NASCAR XFINITY Series championships, he went six years between his first Cup Series win in 2007 and his second in 2013. Just when his career turned around, however, \u201cspingate\u201d happened. His sponsor NAPA left, then Michael Waltrip Racing cut him loose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the offseason, he sat on his porch and pondered if he\u2019d ever race in the Cup Series again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The White Zone: Martin Truex Jr. goes from journeyman to Hall of Famer<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was late in the season, (I) found out I wasn&#8217;t going to have a sponsor, obviously, for the next year,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn&#8217;t know of any rides available. I didn&#8217;t know anything\u2011\u2011 I didn&#8217;t know of any opportunities at that point in time, so I knew it was definitely going to be a tough road.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then, he got a call from the owner of Furniture Row Racing, Barney Visser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was just a matter of luck and timing to be honest that it all came together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest was history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, after an abysmal 2014 season, another long winless drought and Sherry Pollex\u2019s ongoing battle with cancer, it all worked out for him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truex, who once went 218 races between wins (second only to Bill Elliott\u2019s 226-race drought) and lost a ride because of actions beyond his control, morphed into one of the top drivers of the Cup Series and hoisted the Bill France Cup for the first time in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday, he added a second trophy to his resume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2020\/06\/11\/truex-wins-at-martinsville-on-historic-day-for-nascar\/\" target=\"_self\">32 wins<\/a> to his tally, which ties him for 27th on NASCAR\u2019s all-time wins list (with Dale Jarrett), Truex becomes just the 17th driver to ever win multiple Cup Series championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a driver who we all might\u2019ve looked back on and wondered what might\u2019ve been, Truex punched his ticket to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If that&#8217;s not a 30 for 30 special, I don&#8217;t know what is.<\/p>\n<h2>Unpublished championship stories: 2021<\/h2>\n<h3>The White Zone: Denny Hamlin broke through<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9444\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9444 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-1351927979.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-1351927979.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-1351927979-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-1351927979-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AVONDALE, Ariz. &#8211; NOVEMBER 7: Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 FedEx Express Toyota, drives during the NASCAR Cup Series Championship at Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 7, 2021, in Avondale, Arizona. With 46 Cup Series victories, he tied NASCAR Hall of Famer, Buck Baker. He and everyone ahead of Hamlin on that list, minus Junior Johnson, have a championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Sunday, Hamlin\u2019s resume included the aforementioned wins as a driver (<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2021\/10\/05\/white-zone-bubba-wallace-did-it\/\" target=\"_self\">plus one as an owner<\/a>) and three Daytona 500 victories. The championship column, however, was a goose egg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was a modern day Mark Martin, but then, he broke through.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The White Zone: Denny Hamlin broke through<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, Hamlin added his name to the list of champions. Twenty-three of whom are in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If any doubt remained to Hamlin\u2019s hall of fame resume, it evaporated, Sunday. Of the 17 drivers ahead of him on the wins list, all but three are in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Two of them are active and one just retired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even below him, the only champions not in the hall yet are active drivers and Matt Kenseth, who enters the hall in January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only that, but all the comparisons to him and Martin ended, Sunday. Never again will Hamlin hear that he can\u2019t get it done. Never again will he hear that he\u2019s accomplished everything, but win a championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday, he broke through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Hamlin exorcised <a href=\"https:\/\/racing.ap.org\/article\/column-time-hamlin-put-or-shut-title-race\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the ghosts of 2010<\/a>. When he blew his chance to clinch the championship with one race to go and lost to Jimmie Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday, he broke through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fans can boo all they want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday, he broke through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it\u2019s true that Hamlin\u2019s title run isn\u2019t as dramatic as <strong>Kyle Larson<\/strong>\u2019s would\u2019ve been. It\u2019s not a 30 for 30 special in the making, like <strong>Martin Truex Jr.<\/strong>&#8216;s would&#8217;ve been. Winning multiple championships is even more difficult, with only 16 drivers accomplishing that feat. Winning consecutive titles is a Herculean task, with only 10 drivers laying claim to that distinction. Moreover, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2021\/02\/09\/driver-thoughts-on-nascar-playoffs\/\" target=\"_self\">the luck-heavy nature of the Playoffs<\/a> makes this all but impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or so we thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reigning champion <strong>Chase Elliott<\/strong> hoisted the Bill France Cup for the second year in a row, Sunday, at Phoenix Raceway. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering he won it during a season where teammate <strong>Kyle Larson<\/strong> tore his way through the Cup Series, it reinforces all the talk of him being a generational talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The White Zone: Chase Elliott goes back-to-back<\/h3>\n<h4>The list<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He joins an elite group of drivers to win back-to-back championships. Which includes Hendrick Motorsports co-owner Jeff Gordon and retired teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2020\/02\/13\/white-zone-jimmie-johnson-deserves-more-respect-than-hes-received\/\" target=\"_self\">Jimmie Johnson<\/a>. Furthermore, he joins the list of multiple time champions. A feat that not even his father, NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, accomplished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, barring a seismic shift in popularity, Chase Elliott joins NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty as the only drivers to ever win both the Cup Series championship and Most Popular Driver honors in back-to-back years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankly, there\u2019s no reason to think he can\u2019t match Johnson and Cale Yarborough\u2019s three-peat, in 2022. After all, he accomplished a task not done in 11 years and too many playoff changes to count. Moreover, he followed in the heels of his beloved Atlanta Braves, who spent most of the season under .500, but upended the Houston Astros, Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2931764\/2021\/11\/03\/braves-clinch-world-series-title-on-max-frieds-arm-jorge-solers-mammoth-homer\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to win the World Series<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Elliott pulls off the three-peat, next season, then just go ahead and get measurements for his blue jacket.
