{"id":9234,"date":"2021-09-06T11:47:26","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T15:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=9234"},"modified":"2022-07-22T12:08:34","modified_gmt":"2022-07-22T16:08:34","slug":"kyle-larson-i-tried-to-video-game-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2021\/09\/06\/kyle-larson-i-tried-to-video-game-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyle Larson: &#8216;I tried to video game it&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Desperate times call for desperate measures.<\/p>\n<p>Coming to the checkered flag of Sunday&#8217;s Cook Out Southern 500,\u00a0<strong>Kyle Larson<\/strong> channeled his inner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/autoracing\/2008\/09\/video_game_move_fails_johnson.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carl Edwards<\/strong><\/a> and rode the wall through Turns 3 and 4 to pull up to\u00a0<strong>Denny Hamlin<\/strong>&#8216;s bumper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We got to the white,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and I was like, &#8216;Well, I haven\u2019t been able to gain on him now, I\u2019m going to try something.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Larson gambled on Hamlin &#8220;diamonding&#8221; the turns, which he did most of the night, and he&#8217;d power around him up high.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn\u2019t want to wreck him,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I just wanted to try to get to his outside there, but he did a great job not really making any mistakes during the last run, and I was having to push really hard in second to try and just stay with him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Larson: I tried to video game it.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobpockrass\/status\/1434705034340675585?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 6, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Kyle Larson: &#8216;I tried to video game it&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Larson dominated the night at Darlington Raceway, leading a race high of 156 laps, but a slow pit stop on Lap 299 shuffled him behind\u00a0<strong>Ross Chastain<\/strong>. A caution on Lap 319, however, mitigated the time lost, and he lined up behind Hamlin and Chastain on the Lap 326 restart.<\/p>\n<p>Hamlin dealt with relatively little lap traffic in the closing laps. Thus, Larson couldn&#8217;t take advantage and complete an overtake for the lead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our HendrickCars.com Chevy was really good out front, just in traffic I would get stuck,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Like in traffic I just got stuck really bad, and then there at the end losing control of the race really hurt us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All in all, it was a solid outing at &#8220;The Lady in Black&#8221; for Larson, with a second-place finish in Stage 1 and victory in Stage 2. Though not as memorable as his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2021\/05\/09\/kyle-larson-bold-move\/\" target=\"_self\">&#8220;thread the needle&#8221; pass<\/a>, back in May, he leaves Darlington, South Carolina, with an 80-point cushion over the Round of 16 cutoff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All-in-all a great day, good points day,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Pit crew did great. Cliff (Daniels, crew chief) made some good changes in the car, so try again next week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TOP IMAGE: Jared C.
