Hendrick Motorsports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hendrickmotorsports.com\/news\/articles\/108239\/hendrick-motorsports-taps-alex-bowman-to-drive-no-48-ally-chevrolet-in-2021\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> Tuesday that\u00a0<strong>Alex Bowman<\/strong> will take over\u00a0the No. 48 Chevrolet in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This comes in the midst of a career season for the 27-year-old out of Tucson, Arizona, with one victory and still in the thick of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have tremendous faith in this team,\u201d Rick Hendrick, team owner, said. \u201cEvery season, Alex gets better. Not only do we see it in the statistics, but his confidence and leadership have truly blossomed. Today he\u2019s a proven winner and playoff contender, and his best years are ahead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bowman replaces\u00a0<strong>Jimmie Johnson<\/strong>, who announced last November he&#8217;d <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2019\/11\/20\/jimmie-johnson-will-retire-from-full-time-competition-after-2020\/\" target=\"_self\">retire from full-time competition<\/a> at the end of the 2020 season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t put my respect for Jimmie into words,&#8221; Bowman said. &#8220;To me, the No. 48 team\u2019s legacy is about winning, but also how you go about your business. It\u2019s leadership, confidence, work ethic, being a professional and holding yourself to a higher standard. No one will ever be Jimmie, and he\u2019s given us a championship blueprint to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with full season sponsorship from Ally, he&#8217;ll take current crew chief, Greg Ives, with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Greg has won championships and races,&#8221; Hendrick said, &#8220;and he brings the No. 48 pedigree that\u2019s invaluable. When you add in the amazing enthusiasm and support from Ally, it\u2019s quite a combination. Their partnership makes it all possible, and we look forward to celebrating many successes together in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This announcement is a far cry from where Bowman was in 2016, when he learned via Twitter that he was out of a ride at Tommy Baldwin Racing.<\/p>\n<p>It came as a surprise to many.
