He was 17.5 miles from becoming the third driver to win both the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same season. His car rolled down across the track, before coming to a stop on the grass in Turn 2.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had a fast car obviously and was stretching it out there but wasn\u2019t pushing right front at all,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It\u2019s kind of roulette if you\u2019re going to get one that will stay together or not and mine didn\u2019t. You saw the end result.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the second time in four years that Hamlin&#8217;s wrecked out of the lead at Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These big races &#8212; things don\u2019t go my way all the time,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We\u2019re still going to go next week and try to win the next one. We\u2019ll do all we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This came after <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonmotorsport.com\/2020\/07\/05\/white-zone-high-downforce-package-is-a-joke\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his pit crew out-performed\u00a0<strong>Kevin Harvick<\/strong>&#8216;s on pit road and got him out ahead on the final cycle of green flag pit stops<\/a>. It was the third straight race in which <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonmotorsport.com\/2020\/06\/29\/hamlin-pocono-350\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they battled for the win in the closing laps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s probably not another guy I would rather battle with each and every week,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Congrats to them and their team, they did a great job. Obviously, we had two very, very close and equal cars. They got it today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/racer.com\/2020\/07\/05\/tire-failures-plague-several-cup-drivers-at-indy\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hamlin&#8217;s tire blowout was one of many, Sunday, at Indianapolis<\/a>, which included teammate\u00a0<strong>Erik Jones<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Blaney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It was the climax of a day in which he led 19 laps and finished sixth and third in the stages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s just tough. I hate it for the FedEx team.
