{"id":7081,"date":"2019-07-22T11:51:50","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T15:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=7081"},"modified":"2019-07-22T11:59:05","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T15:59:05","slug":"axalta-to-sponsor-jason-johnson-racing-david-gravel-for-knoxville-nationals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2019\/07\/22\/axalta-to-sponsor-jason-johnson-racing-david-gravel-for-knoxville-nationals\/","title":{"rendered":"Axalta to sponsor Jason Johnson Racing, David Gravel for Knoxville Nationals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a move that was first reported by the Sports Business Journal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adam Stern<\/strong>, Axalta Racing will be sponsoring the No. 41 Jason Johnson Racing entry in the 2019 Knoxville Nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Stern reported that former NASCAR superstar\u00a0<strong>Jeff Gordon\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; who was sponsored by the company under the name DuPont &#8211; gave the push to get the familiar colors on the car.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Heeding advice from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffGordonWeb?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@JeffGordonWeb<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Axalta?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Axalta<\/a> this week will announce that it will sponsor Jason Johnson Racing&#39;s No. 41 car driven by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidGravel?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DavidGravel<\/a> in next month\u2019s Knoxville Nationals:<\/p>\n<p>\u2796 Terms not disclosed, but industry execs say such a pact would typically cost around $50K. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TGTHt2PEyi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/TGTHt2PEyi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Adam Stern (@A_S12) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/A_S12\/status\/1153290729424400384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 22, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>David Gravel<\/strong>\u00a0will be behind the wheel of the car, as he has been in each race of this year&#8217;s World of Outlaws Season.<\/p>\n<p>Gravel currently sits in third place in the Outlaws points, corralling four wins and 23 top five&#8217;s in 41 races this year.<\/p>\n<p>He finished 10th at the 2018 Knoxville Nationals driving for CJB Motorsports.<\/p>\n<p>Although, the No. 41 has historically been fast at Knoxville.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016,\u00a0<strong>Jason Johnson\u00a0<\/strong>broke\u00a0<strong>Donny Schatz&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>five-year streak by holding off the No. 15 to take home the title.<\/p>\n<p>After Johnson passed away in an accident in 2018,\u00a0<strong>Carson Macedo\u00a0<\/strong>raced the No. 41 car at Knoxville, finishing sixth.<\/p>\n<p>Gravel will be racing for his first Knoxville Nationals championship, trying to upset Schatz, <strong>Kraig Kinser\u00a0<\/strong>and 2018 champ\u00a0<strong>Brad Sweet<\/strong>. The trio are the only active World of Outlaws drivers to win the Nationals, an event that pays $10,000 to start the A-Main and $150,000 to win.<\/p>\n<p>The NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals will take place in the second week of August (Wednesday Aug. 7 &#8211; Saturday Aug. 11) to conclude the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series&#8217; month of money.
