{"id":6121,"date":"2018-09-07T12:46:16","date_gmt":"2018-09-07T16:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=6121"},"modified":"2018-09-07T12:46:16","modified_gmt":"2018-09-07T16:46:16","slug":"schatz-holds-off-kkr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2018\/09\/07\/schatz-holds-off-kkr\/","title":{"rendered":"Donny Schatz holds off KKR heat as Outlaws head to Cali"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since <strong>Brad Sweet <\/strong>took home his first career Knoxville Nationals victory nearly a month ago, <strong>Donny Schatz <\/strong>and Kasey Kahne Racing \u2013 Sweet\u2019s team \u2013 have been battling things out at the head of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series field.<\/p>\n<p>Schatz earned two wins in a row following Sweet\u2019s big money night to keep the No. 49 team at bay in the points standings while in his home state of North Dakota. Though, the weekend after, Sweet and his KKR teammate <strong>Daryn Pittman <\/strong>earned the two-race sweep, countering Schatz\u2019 success.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Donny Schatz holds off KKR heat as Outlaws head to Cali<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Coming into the Gold Cup Race of Champions this Friday and Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway, the No. 15 car holds a two-race winning streak. Schatz earned victories at both Grays Harbor Raceway on Monday and Willamette Speedway on Wednesday, padding his lead in the points standings.<\/p>\n<p>After the pair of wins, Schatz finds himself 260 points ahead of Sweet going into Chico, CA \u2013 where he won three years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gold Cup Race of Champions past winners<\/strong><br \/>\n2017 Friday \u2013 Kyle Hirst<br \/>\n2017 Saturday \u2013 Shane Stewart<br \/>\n2016 Friday \u2013 Shane Stewart<br \/>\n2016 Saturday \u2013 Rico Abreau<br \/>\n2015 Friday \u2013 Shane Stewart<br \/>\n2015 Saturday \u2013 Donny Schatz<\/p>\n<p>Though, it\u2019s been a year of success for Sweet. The driver they call the \u201cBig Cat,\u201d has been on his game this season. Sweet has tallied 34 top five\u2019s over the course of the season and has seemingly been the only driver that is close to keeping pace with Schatz \u2013 who currently has 42.<\/p>\n<p>He hasn\u2019t had a win at Chico lately, but it\u2019s not far-fetched to say he will be competing with Schatz for one this weekend. As for the other competitors in the field, one stands out brightly: <strong>Shane Stewart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the past six races at Silver Dollar Raceway, Stewart has found himself in victory lane three times. A fourth or fifth time could not come soon enough for him this weekend, either. So far this season, the Tulsa, Oklahoma native has just one World of Outlaws victory \u2013 his lowest total since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>With his car owner \u2013 <strong>Kyle Larson<\/strong> \u2013 racing at the track one day before Stewart, look for him to bring his A-game to California this week.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Qualifying for each night of racing at the Gold Cup is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silverdollarspeedway.com\/gold-cup\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PT<\/a> and 9:30 p.m. ET.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>World of Outlaws Standings<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>After 54 of 74 races<br \/>\n<\/em>1.
