{"id":5021,"date":"2018-06-22T12:01:05","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T16:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=5021"},"modified":"2018-06-22T12:01:46","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T16:01:46","slug":"french-gp-friday-free-practice-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2018\/06\/22\/french-gp-friday-free-practice-results\/","title":{"rendered":"French GP &#8211; Friday Free Practice Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>French Grand Prix<\/strong> weekend got off to a hot start and the battle in front seems to be as tight as ever. <strong>Lewis Hamilton<\/strong> registered the fastest laps in both sessions, with <strong>Valtteri Bottas<\/strong> in second place during FP1. <strong>Red Bull<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Daniel Ricciardo<\/strong> followed the English driver in FP2.<\/p>\n<h1>Friday Free Practice Results<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Scuderia Ferrari<\/strong> remained in its typical Friday approach. <strong>Kimi Raikkonen<\/strong> lined up fourth in both practice sessions and the championship leader, <strong>Sebastian Vettel<\/strong>, was fifth in both practice sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The main takeaways from\u00a0both sessions were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While Lewis Hamilton had a problem-free Friday, Valtteri Bottas missed most of FP2 due to mechanical\u00a0problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sauber<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Marcus Ericsson<\/strong> had a big crash during FP1. His car burst into flames, and the Swedish driver could not take part in FP2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Haas F1 <\/strong>team returned to its former position as &#8220;best of the rest&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Mercedes&#8217; engine upgrade gave Mercedes and its customers a boost in straight line speed.<\/li>\n<li>FP2 was red-flagged because of a loose wheel on <strong>Sergio P\u00e9rez<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Force India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brendon Hartley<\/strong> of <strong>Toro Rosso<\/strong> suffered an engine issue at the end of FP2<\/li>\n<li>Lap times in FP2 were slower than FP1 due to the increased track temperstures and wind effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Conclusions<\/h1>\n<p>Mercedes looks like the fastest team so far at the <strong>Paul Ricard Circuit<\/strong>. Ferrari had excellent pace during the long runs and showed it would compete on Saturday for qualifying and on Sunday during the race. <strong>Red Bull Racing<\/strong> drivers are also close on race pace.
