{"id":4381,"date":"2018-05-11T12:56:14","date_gmt":"2018-05-11T16:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=4381"},"modified":"2018-05-11T12:56:14","modified_gmt":"2018-05-11T16:56:14","slug":"spanish-gp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2018\/05\/11\/spanish-gp\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish GP &#8211; Mercedes On Top Again in Friday Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first two practice sessions on Friday for the <strong>Spanish Grand Prix<\/strong> saw <strong>Mercedes<\/strong> drivers top the timesheets and the wind caused trouble to most of the cars. <strong>Valtteri Bottas<\/strong> was in front of <strong>Lewis Hamilton<\/strong> in the first free practice session with the fastest time of the day. Hamilton was fastest in the second free practice session and rounded off a satisfactory Friday for the Silver Arrows.<\/p>\n<h2>Free Practice 1 (FP1)<\/h2>\n<p>The main takeaways from FP1 were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Valtteri Bottas looks like a man on a mission, his pace was stunning in FP1 and, despite the early trouble, the Finn managed to go fastest in the opening session in <strong>Barcelona<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daniel Ricciardo<\/strong> didn&#8217;t start\u00a0the weekend in the best way, the Australian crashed after 11 laps. Whilst his teammate, <strong>Max Verstappen <\/strong>was in the top three.<\/li>\n<li>Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes maintained their preference for the harder compound tires.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scuderia Ferrari<\/strong> showed their normal Friday pace, with their drivers lining up third (<strong>Sebastian Vettel<\/strong>) and fifth (<strong>Kimi Raikkonen<\/strong>), 0.9 and 1.3 seconds behind Bottas&#8217; best lap.<\/li>\n<li><strong>McLaren<\/strong>&#8216;s upgrades delivered for <strong>Fernando<\/strong> <strong>Alonso<\/strong> and <strong>Stoffel Vandoorne<\/strong>, as the two drivers finished in the top 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Robert Kubica<\/strong> drove well in FP1, but <strong>Williams<\/strong> continue to struggle in 2018. However, Bottas fell from first to fifth.<\/li>\n<li>Red Bull Racing drivers, Ricciardo and Verstappen, were second and third and close to Hamilton&#8217;s time.<\/li>\n<li>Vettel finished fourth 0.3 seconds slower than the fastest car, while Raikkonen suffered an engine issue and ended sixth.<\/li>\n<li>Mercedes&#8217; drivers marked their fastest times with the soft tire.
