Because of this, the W17’s consecutive victories in Australia and China have cemented this perspective.

This means Toto Wolff and George Russell, who were already media favourites in testing, are frequently at centre stage when rule changes are under discussion.

Speaking to the press in Japan, Russell reacted to the FIA’s recent qualifying adjustment – in addition to the more general theme of rival teams heavily scrutinising the W17.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeyBNscVuL" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4360px; aspect-ratio: 4360/2906;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mercedes at front and centre

In the build-up to this weekend’s action in Japan, Mercedes once again found themselves under the microscope. On this occasion, it was their front wing (rather than their engine) generating scepticism.

Other teams have asked the FIA for clarification of the legality of the W17’s front wing.

The suspicion among some sections of the paddock is that the German constructor’s front wing (utilising active aerodynamics) does not close within the four tenth window permitted by the regulations.

However, it is understood that a small adjustment from Mercedes to avoid potential violations – rather than a massive penalty of clampdown – is the likely conclusion to this enquiry.

Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, the FIA have announced modifications to energy deployment in qualifying. Teams will now have slightly less electrical energy at their disposal throughout the lap.

The core motivation to this change was unrelated to Mercedes. Instead, the complaints made by fans and drivers (including Max Verstappen) have been taken into consideration to improve the spectacle in qualifying.

The FIA are hopeful this amendment will prevent the rather unsightly trend of drivers running out of power at the end of straights – something which goes against the all-out approach seen on Saturdays over recent years.

Still, there have been some suggestions that Mercedes’ advantage in battery efficiency could be mitigated by this rule change.

Russell responds to rivals targeting Mercedes

Speaking to Sky Sports in Suzuka, George Russell responded to a prompt about rivals potentially targeting Mercedes to slow them down:

“That’s just how sport goes on to be honest, it’s always been the case.

“At the end of the day, our team has worked so hard to get ourselves in this position, and the best team should come out on top.

“We’ve obviously had four years of struggle. There have been two other teams over four years who have dominated and won.

“So just because we’re sort of back on top, I don’t think it’s quite right that somebody – or everybody – is trying to slow us down.

“Especially when you’re two races into a big old season.” (cont. on next page)

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBjbGjnf19" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4154px; aspect-ratio: 4154/2769;" ></smartframe-embed>

Somewhat inevitably, the fastest team at the beginning of a regulation change is going to attract the majority of attention from rival teams.

As a manufacturer team with an extremely powerful and efficient engine, Mercedes are fighting a political battle on two fronts – one regarding their power unit and another surrounding their aerodynamic package.

In any case, George Russell insists the W17’s advantage over other teams is smaller than people realise. On paper, there can be no denying the story being told by the timing sheets – Mercedes are on top.

Still, the 28-year-old argues that rivals have more performance than is appears on the surface:

“So things will change. We’ve already seen it looked like Red Bull is overweight from some things we saw in the press last week.

“McLaren haven’t brought an upgrade to the car, they’re still running their Bahrain package.

“We shouldn’t forget these things. We do have an advantage right now, but I think we’ve just really hit the ground running and we’ve done a great job. And we hope it continues, but there’s no guarantee.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esme9aN6oIvk" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mercedes maintain their focus

Ultimately, the predicament Mercedes find themselves in is a good problem to have. Whether it was McLaren in 2025 or Red Bull in 2023, dominant teams always receive heightened levels of scrutiny.

Other teams are understandably attentive to identify any potentially questionable or unnoticed components. Successfully achieving action on another team’s package can be significant in eliminating a winning car’s advantage.

Mercedes would much rather be in this position than the other way around. After all, they themselves regularly made complaints about Red Bull and McLaren throughout the ground-effect era starting in 2022.

For Russell, this year could be his best opportunity to claim a world Championship.

Having joined the Silver Arrows in 2022, just as their dominance of F1 came to an end, the British driver could understandably have been frustrated at the timing of his Mercedes promotion.

Therefore, Russell will need no reminders to understand this season’s significance for his career. Of course, teammate Kimi Antonelli will also be there to keep the British driver under pressure.

Politics are an inherent aspect of Formula 1, particularly during a new regulation change – with teams constantly working to assert their own interests and priorities.
