In the most basic sense, a 19-year-old taking their first F1 win is inevitably a landmark accomplishment.

Beyond this, the Italian driver’s triumph was also significant for Toto Wolff. Only two years ago, the Mercedes team principal was evaluating his next steps after Lewis Hamilton committed himself to Ferrari for 2025.

When Antonelli was announced as the 7-time Champion’s replacement, the reaction was understandably mixed.

However, having failed to sign a young Verstappen over 10 years ago, Wolff did not want to overlook a young prodigy for the second time.

Speaking of Max Verstappen, the Dutchman has been linked to Mercedes for some time. In a recent interview, Toto Wolff made his stance on signing the 28-year-old clear.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeVULFood1" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Wolff: “No reason” to make driver change

Last season’s driver market evolved in a slightly awkward manner for Mercedes. George Russell, who claimed the majority of the team’s points, spent months waiting for a contract extension.

Initially, both Russell and Toto Wolff insisted there was nothing to see. However, as months passed, it became impossible to hide that Mercedes were in negotiations with Verstappen.

Due to the intricacies of the exit clause in Verstappen’s contract, he was unable to leave Red Bull for 2026. This ruled out a shock move to the Silver Arrows to start the new regulations.

Still, Wolff’s interest in the Dutchman was undeniable.

When Russell’s contract was announced last autumn, he even explained that a special clause was in place to safeguard his position in the event Mercedes were tempted to explore the driver market.

Despite this context, the dynamics have changed. The Mercedes team principal says there is no reason to consider signing Verstappen at this stage:

“The astonishing thing is that these silly rumours are already surfacing in March,” Wolff told OE24.

“It’s silly enough that you normally have to discuss these things in July. I don’t know who brought this up again.

“We have two drivers with whom we have long-term, multi-year contracts. I couldn’t be happier with either of them.

“Both are delivering top performances. So there’s absolutely no reason to even consider a line-up change, or other drivers. I say this with the utmost respect for Max.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeYH1oWaag" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3996px; aspect-ratio: 3996/2712;" ></smartframe-embed>

The driver market

Heading into this season, there was plenty of speculation about how the driver market would evolve. After all, the overwhelming majority of the field are on expiring contracts.

Nevertheless, there will still be some teams who retain the same line-up from 2026 to 2027. As it stands, Mercedes are set to fall under this category.

Assuming Mercedes remain the fastest team this season, either Russell or Antonelli are on track to become Champions. In the scenario, a driver line-up change would seem unnecessary and risk potentially destabilising the team.

Even if Ferrari manage to overturn the gap and make a title challenge, it seems unlikely Mercedes would respond with a reactionary move to sign Verstappen.

Overall, the situation at Toto Wolff’s team is stable. George Russell is currently the de-facto team leader, and thus the favourite to secure the title.

Still, the Silver Arrows will be pleased to see Antonelli keeping the British driver honest at just 19 years of age. For now, the Brackley-based operation have a driver combination for the present and the future.

Changing this combination, unless there is a dramatic and unforeseen turn of events, seems off the table.

Kimi Antonelli’s victory in China was consequential on several levels.
