After the season opener Australia, various timelines were floated for a potential recovery to the Honda power unit.

The most optimistic forecasts suggested that short-term fixes could help stabilise the situation. It was frequently reported that Honda were preparing a series of modifications to resolve their problems for the Japanese GP.

In this scenario, at this weekend’s round three in Japan, Aston Martin could have a chance to salvage their season.

Unfortunately for Adrian Newey’s team, recent information suggests things are even worse than feared. There is a growing possibility the Honda engine will remain uncompetitive for the rest of 2026.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmexkB8FEvN" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Honda to consider massive engine overhaul

It was at the Thursday press conference in Australia that Aston Martin and Honda’s predicament became clear. Team principal Adrian Newey left no room for interpretation about the dilemma behind the scenes:

“Honda pulled out [of Formula 1] at the end of 2021. They then re-entered the sport, kind of, at the end of 2022.

“So over roughly a year, a year and a bit, out of competition. When they reformed, a lot of the original group had, it now transpires, disbanded and went to work on solar panels or whatever

“And so a lot of the group that reformed are actually fresh to Formula 1.”

This interview somewhat contextualised how significant Honda’s engine issues were. At the time, this revelation was deemed sufficient to explain the Japanese manufacturer’s troubles.

Moreover, given Red Bull’s aggressive acquisition of Honda engineers to their Powertrains division in 2021 and 2022, Newey’s comments provided some insight into Red Bull’s solid start with their new engine.

Returning to Aston Martin, the last few weeks have seen a series of increasingly worrying statements and analysis emerge.

Fundamentally, the problem Honda face appears to be bigger than first imagined. Of course, it was never expected that the Japanese engine would be challenging Mercedes in the near future.

With that said, there was a lingering belief that more mileage and data collection could help Honda understand some of their issues. From here, there was some hope that notable improvements could be introduced and help stabilise the situation.

Unfortunately, even short-term relief seems unlikely. Although a lack of pre-season testing obviously did not help with understanding this new power unit, the problem is far more foundational.

Whilst Honda are still very much managing their engine, it would be inaccurate to suggest there is more performance in the engine waiting to be unlocked – assuming reliability is resolved.

Even at full power and putting reliability concerns to the side, the engine is nowhere near its competitors. This is true both in terms of pure horsepower and the deployment of electrical energy.

Some of this can be attributed to the vibrations, which inevitably contribute to a variety of issues. Still, since the cause of these vibrations remains unknown, a complete redesign of the power unit design could be necessary.

Indeed, as reported by Japanese outlet Shiga Sports, the consensus is that Honda’s engine must undertake a “complete overhaul”.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBkBzcU67o" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5289px; aspect-ratio: 5289/3526;" ></smartframe-embed>

Re-shuffling for the medium-term

In short, the chances of a quick fix emerging in the coming months seems to be off the cards.

Consequently, there is already a significant emphasis being placed at Aston Martin towards 2027. Even the team’s ongoing efforts to sign Jonathan Wheatley as team principal will only have a real impact next season.

Given that Wheatley was Audi team principal until just last week, he will almost certainly be placed on ‘gardening leave’.

This would essentially force Wheatley (assuming Aston get the move across the line) to wait a few months before he can officially begin working at the team.

As part of his responsibilities, the 58-year-old (or any other team principal) would oversee a significant transformation at Honda. Onboarding more engineers, including those who were previously part of the factory programme, and strengthening the engine department will be a top priority.

All of this will happen in conjunction with a radically new power unit design for 2027. Of course, Adrian Newey’s technical team cannot neglect chassis development either – even if a lack of track time gives them very limited date to work with.

In short, the 2026 could become something of a transitional period for Aston Martin – with a view to next season.

This is not to say Honda and Aston Martin cannot make improvements over the course of this year. However, the magnitude of the team’s problems will likely require more than just a few months to address.

Although Aston Martin and Honda’s start to 2026 has been nothing short of catastrophic, there were previously a few strands of hope.
