Amidst all the chatter about Mercedes<\/a> and their dominant start, other stories – such as VCARB’s Arvid Lindblad<\/a>\u00a0– have been overlooked. As the sole rookie of 2026, the 18-year-old is eager to make an impression.<\/p>\n

Lindblad has been highly rated for some time now, hence his rapid ascent up the Red Bull academy. Within a few minutes of qualifying in Australia, he validated this confidence in his potential.<\/p>\n

The British driver set a strong opening lap in Q1, putting himself several tenths ahead of teammate Liam Lawson. His first effort was sufficient to be comfortably through for the next part of qualifying.<\/p>\n

He then capitalised on the VCARB 03’s evident pace to put himself into the final shootout. Whilst a poor final lap prevented him from qualifying higher than 9th, Lindblad can be pleased with his efforts.<\/p>\n

Last year’s rookie drivers, of which there were many, received plenty of attention. From Kimi Antonelli to Gabriel Bortoleto to Isack Hadjar, the new additions to the 2025 grid were very impressive.<\/p>\n

Oliver Bearman<\/a>, who was also in last year’s rookie class, out-qualified teammate Esteban Ocon in Australia – something which became increasingly common throughout last season.<\/p>\n

With Bortoleto<\/a> and Hadjar also enjoying strong qualifying results in Australia, this group of young talent looks here to stay in Formula 1.<\/p>\n

However, this promising young group is seemingly expanding already. Arvid Lindblad’s first qualifying session in F1 was very well-executed, putting him comfortably in the hunt for points on Sunday.<\/p>\n

This is not to say there is no room for improvement. A scrappy lap in Q3 saw Lawson win Melbourne’s Saturday head-to-head between the VCARB duo.<\/p>\n

Still, as Lindblad explained post-session, his feelings after qualifying at Albert Park were overwhelmingly positive:<\/p>\n

“It was really good, I think all weekend we\u2019ve been quite competitive,”<\/em> he told the media.<\/p>\n

“I was trying to not get too excited after yesterday, because we didn\u2019t know if things were going to change or if other teams had more in the pocket.<\/em><\/p>\n

“But I kind of knew coming into the session that we were fast, and I just needed to focus on myself and do my job and we could be competitive.<\/em><\/p>\n

“The team have done a phenomenal job. It\u2019s really impressive to have two cars in Q3, especially from where we were in Bahrain. I think it was much more than [mine] and the team\u2019s expectations, so I\u2019m extremely happy and just can\u2019t wait for tomorrow.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Points on the table<\/h4>\n

There have been spells in VCARB’s history (when they were known as Toro Rosso and AlphaTauri) that top 10 results were difficult to achieve.<\/p>\n

As a result, it was more difficult for their young drivers to make an impression with noteworthy results. Thankfully for Lindblad, VCARB have kept themselves at the front of the midfield.<\/p>\n

This gives the 18-year-old a good platform to show his ability over the course of 2026. Of course, since the Faenza outfit are still in the midfield, the environment is relatively low-pressure.<\/p>\n

Such conditions are ideal for a youngster to learn and adapt to Formula 1. It also helps that Red Bull<\/a> are expected to be more patient with their driver pairing under the leadership of Laurent Mekies.<\/p>\n
