After all, 2026 marks the Neuberg outfit&#8217;s first year producing an F1-calibre engine.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last few weeks, however, Audi have quickly proven the more pessimistic forecasts about their performance to be incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their lack of experience and early hiccups during the development of their engine programme (which saw <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/02\/04\/binotto-audi-have-many-problems-to-fix-before-2026-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Mattia Binotto<\/a> and Jonathan Wheatley brought into the team to rectify the situation), Audi are in a strong position.<\/p>\n<p>During his Friday media duties, Gabriel Bortoleto spoke positively about the team&#8217;s foundation for the 2026 campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f\" image-id=\"esmeLT9gGkfL\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000\/4000;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2>Bortoleto reflects on Audi R26 debut in Australia<\/h2>\n<p>In the build-up to 2026, both Audi and Red Bull&#8217;s chances of delivering a competitive engine were doubted. This pessimism was understandable, given the challenges associated with being a manufacturer team.<\/p>\n<p>Audi&#8217;s journey was particularly tricky, given that &#8211; unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/03\/05\/george-russell-warns-suspiciously-slow-red-bull-will-be-a-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull<\/a> &#8211; Mattia Binotto&#8217;s engine department does not consist of dozens of engineers signed from rivals.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Red Bull aggressively hired engineers and technicians from Mercedes and Honda&#8217;s engine department, Audi have looked internally to build their powertrains division.<\/p>\n<p>This approach was always the most likely option, in the context of the German brand&#8217;s philosophy across multiple sporting categories.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, since Audi&#8217;s engine factory is based in Germany, they have a tougher task in hiring personnel from rivals &#8211; since most other manufacturers are based in England.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all this, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/07\/14\/jonathan-wheatley-no-doubts-perez-is-capable-of-f1-comeback\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Jonathan Wheatley&#8217;s squad<\/a> has arrived to Australia in solid shape. This applies to both their engine and aerodynamic package.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel Bortoleto summarised things after concluding his Free Practice running:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The car was feeling OK, honestly. FP1 was very solid, very smooth, not really big problems &#8211; no issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Then in FP2 I suffered a little bit more with a couple of things we need to fix for tomorrow. Things that are a bit out of my hands and the team&#8217;s hands &#8211; it just happens.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;But I think that&#8217;s [what happens in] the beginning of a new regulation. We need to expect to suffer with these things, and then fix with time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Still, a very positive day for the team. Me and Nico understand a lot about our car, our power unit &#8211; obviously a huge amount of work ahead of us.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBdZ52NwDY\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4000px; aspect-ratio: 4000\/2667;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h4>Firmly in the midfield scrap<\/h4>\n<p>With Cadillac still finding their feet and Aston Martin constrained by an underperforming engine, Audi can look forward to making Q2 at the bare minimum.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond this, other midfield outfits such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/03\/03\/williams-suffering-from-extreme-case-of-excess-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Williams<\/a> are also encountering significant problems. In this turbulent environment, Audi are actually in a more stable position than most would have anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>Bortoleto and teammate Nico Hulkenberg have both given reasonable positive feedback about the R26. Of course, this does not mean there is not room for improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/03\/06\/leclerc-ferrari-on-the-back-foot-compared-to-mercedes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes<\/a> engine starts operating at full power, potential rivals Alpine and Williams stand to benefit.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, Audi recognise the road ahead is still a long one. Aside from strengthening their power unit division, recruiting the best minds to their design and technical team is also essential.<\/p>\n<p>The team are likely to draw upon their best personnel from other racing series to meet this objective.
