The engine agreement intended to give Aston Martin complete control over their own development &#8211; freeing them from the restrictions of a customer team &#8211; is raising alarm bells.<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, the Honda engine is struggling with reliability. This was apparent in Bahrain testing, where the AMR26 completed the fewest laps of any car.<\/p>\n<p>Because of Honda&#8217;s infamous spell with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/02\/05\/piastri-mclaren-papaya-rules-will-look-different-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">McLaren<\/a>, there is an understandable tendency to hyper-fixate on this area. It is a mistake to assume this is the team&#8217;s only problem.<\/p>\n<p>Still, for Aston to complete the necessary kilometres to properly assess their aerodynamic package, they need an engine reliable enough to accumulate laps.<\/p>\n<p>For the time being, there is little confidence that Honda can provide this durability. As a result, the Japanese manufacturer have outlined their targets for the start of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f\" image-id=\"esmejfZ6YfTv\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4800px; aspect-ratio: 4800\/3200;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2>Honda focus on reliability, performance will come later<\/h2>\n<p>Because of how extensive Aston Martin&#8217;s reliability issues were during testing, they themselves cannot be sure about how competitive their package is.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/02\/01\/f1-aston-martin-set-to-bring-more-radical-version-of-amr26\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">AMR26<\/a>, which will see several new components fitted this weekend in Australia, is a very bold aerodynamic design. However, a lack of running makes it difficult to assess how it compares to other teams.<\/p>\n<p>Although there are some certainties at Honda, such as their serious reliability issues, there are also many question marks.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the Australian GP, there are two main scenarios. In the first, Honda discover that one key issue &#8211; their excessive vibrations &#8211; is the cause of the problems experienced until now.<\/p>\n<p>In this event, Honda&#8217;s solutions to mitigate the problem should take effect.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for the Japanese manufacturer, this is not guaranteed. There is also a possibility that a multitude of issues &#8211; yet to be fully discovered &#8211; need to be addressed on the power unit side.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, there is no telling <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/02\/19\/when-aston-martin-hope-to-reverse-the-amr26s-nightmare-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">how significant Aston Martin&#8217;s troubles will be<\/a> when the season commences.<\/p>\n<p>Still, regardless of how extensive the damage is, they are certainly not where they want to be. This means upgrades, and plenty of them, are necessary to rectify the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Honda Racing President Koji Watanabe has spoken directly about the team&#8217;s predicament:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;At this moment, our attention is focused on improving the power unit&#8217;s reliability,&#8221;<\/em> he told Spanish outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/as.com\/motor\/formula_1\/honda-sabemos-donde-mejorar-f202603-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;After this, we can work very closely with the team on drivability, where there is a lot we can do regarding the integration of the engine in the AMR26.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We are prioritising the problems and trying to solve them step by step. This will be a constant job that will take some time.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is understood that significant revisions to the Honda power unit could take a few months to arrive.<\/p>\n<p>This means, for the time being, the Japanese manufacturer is targeting quick solutions can be temporarily ease the situation.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We will take the first races of the season as a way to learn about the engine, its integration in the chassis and how we can optimise energy deployment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Our relationship with him [Adrian Newey] is good. It&#8217;s a question of time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;During the tests, we spoke every day between ourselves about improving the situation in the short and long term.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Two paths forward for Honda and Aston<\/h4>\n<p>There can be no denying that Aston Martin&#8217;s predicament is very severe. The team&#8217;s aspirations of becoming contenders with these 2026 regulations seem far away.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the Silverstone-based operation are in a worse position than they were ten years ago (as Force India), at a time when their facilities and workforce were extremely limited compared to today.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence Stroll obviously has not invested in this project for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/02\/10\/aston-martin-starting-on-the-back-foot-says-adrian-newey\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Aston<\/a> to become backmarkers. As a result, the next few months could be more painful than anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>Still, as Watanabe mentioned in his declarations, the team must prioritise their more critical problems.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst there are still plenty of uncertainties, improving a few key areas could quickly brighten the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the issues with Honda&#8217;s engine, for example, can be attributed to some relatively late changes to the AMR26&#8217;s packaging &#8211; which the Japanese manufacturer were forced to adapt to.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, it stands to reason that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/02\/04\/f1-adrian-newey-reveals-crucial-2026-advantage-for-aston-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Honda can field a more competitive engine<\/a> with more time.<\/p>\n<p>As previously mentioned, there is also the possibility that one major issue (the excessive engine vibrations) could be the main culprit for Aston&#8217;s nightmarish performance in Bahrain.<\/p>\n<p>After all, reliability was such a significant concern that the Honda engine was never pushed anywhere near its limits. Whilst this lack of confidence is obviously a problem, it still leaves room for a more optimistic interpretation that &#8211; once reliability is fixed &#8211; the Japanese power unit could be competitive.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, only after the first few rounds will more clarity emerge on the extent of Aston Martin&#8217;s dilemma.<\/p>\n<p>Integrating Adrian Newey whilst introducing a new engine partner was always going to be difficult. Now the challenge of putting the pieces of the puzzle together is even greater.
